LOS ANGELES - Bob Barker famously closed each episode of "The Price Is Right" with a pitch to spay and neuter pets. His successor is taking a stand on a more controversial subject: marijuana. Drew Carey won't tout toking up on "Price," but he defends the use of medical marijuana in a video posted online Thursday on Reason.tv.
"Smell that smell," the 49-year-old comedian says as he walks into a Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensary. "That's the smell of freedom."
The video is one of 20 Carey will host for the Reason Foundation, a nonprofit educational group whose ideas "some people call libertarian" and whose mission is to "advance freedom," said president David Nott.
Carey offered to produce brief documentaries on topics ranging from traffic congestion to immigration for the foundation's Web site, Nott said.
"Drew Carey connects with regular people. ... He has a regular guy's look at things, and that's why this seems like a great thing," he said. "We're interested in freedom across the spectrum, and good journalism about these subjects is important in the world of ideas."

All of those in this small study (50 patients) were pot smokers. I would think they would be able to tell good pot from ditchweed. Even then, only half said pain was reduced. Hell, 25% of those on the placebo said pain was reduced. Marinol was not even considered.
The doctor who conducted this study is a (smoked) medical marijuana activist with a long combative history with NIDA. If he told me 2+2=4 I'd double check it on my calculator.
Drew Carey and Bob Barker should not even be compared. Carey is intelligent and Barker is a flake.
Very true. Nor is it your call to use the force of government to prohibit all from doing it for their illness. Agreed?
Not at all.
It's the function of government, and within their police powers, to look after the health and safety of its citizens. The drug has no accepted medical use and there is no reason to legalize it.
Now, if people wish to use it as medicine, no one can stop them nor is anyone trying go stop them. There are consequences, however.
But to then come on this forum proclaiming, "It worked for me and it should be legal so it can work for everyone!" is irresponsible, at best.
So if the FDA approved the use of medicinal marijuana you'd support their decision?
Is that a FireFox plugin? I'd love to see the code to that.
Let's not go there. Bob's the man.
Says the person that would rather see them die in pain than break the law. I'm sure you would have supported slavery because it was legal and then stopped supporting it when it became illegal. Life must be easy when you don't have to make your own moral decisions.
That is such a loaded question, I don't know where to begin.
Let's say the FDA reviewed reports, conducted studies of their own, and found that smoked marijuana alleviated the symptoms associated with "X" disease. Therefore, they approved smoked marijuana for patients with "X" disease. And you're asking if I support that decision? Is that about right?
My answer is, that'll never happen. Smoked marijuana will never be considered medicine.
BUT, if that happened, then yes I'd support it, provided it was implemented like any other drug (a doctor's prescription, dispensed by a pharmacist, specified dosage and frequency for a limited time, number of refills, side effects, drug interactions, legal liability of both doctor and patient for abuse).
You're saying that I would rather see a loved one die in pain than break the law? That's a rather personal accusation based on nothing but pure speculation, isn't it?
I said before, you do what you gotta do. If a man steals food to feed his starving family, that doesn't mean that I'm willing to make that activity legal for everyone.
Yeah, and you’d smile when that man was thrown in jail because the law was upheld.
Yes, they should. It would be irresponsible if they didn't. Government has the obligation to protect its citizens.
We don't have vigilantes patrolling our neighborhood. We don't organize posses. We don't hang criminals from trees. We don't make our individual rules.
We are governed by the rule of law. And the law is that medical marijuana is illegal. Change the law. Prove that smoked marijuana is medicine.
Only if he started in with the, "But the law isn't fair ... make an exception for me ... I had to do it ... where's your compassion?".
On the other hand, if he took it like a man, if he admitted he knew it was wrong, that he was willing to face the consequences for his actions, well, I'd shake his hand.
I'd still lock him up.
I know Carey has dealt with Depression in his life. I wonder if he is a big believer in self medicating with marijuana. Just think of the message he could be sending to all younger people that have depression that think it might be OK being a pothead with mental health issues because he defends it.
Interesting. The law will eventually change. Until then, tens of millions of people will still use drugs, illegal or not.
Based on your posts in this thread, you appear to me to be an ultra-law and order guy. The law says marijuana is illegal, end of discussion. If marijuana was legalized, then you would have no problem with marijuana. The morality of the law is irrelevant. All that matters is what the law says. You appear to be a legal positivist. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Yes, cancer patients should be “allowed” to smoke whatever they want if it helps them to eat. And statists such as yourself should have absolutely no say in it.
"Based on your posts in this thread, you appear to me to be an ultra-law and order guy."
I believe in the rule of law, yes.
"The morality of the law is irrelevant."
Do you think a law against addictive psychotropic recreational drugs is immoral? I don't. Why would you even bring that up in a thread like this?
"You appear to be a legal positivist"
You got that from what, one post?
Even if it kills them in the process.
And you say you're the one who cares!
