I have no problem with states granting a non-citizen Driver’s License to illegal immigrants. But it would have to be visually distinct with “NON-CITIZEN” printed in big, bold letters, and would need text on the back making it clear that the document was to be used for driving purposes only, and not for voting, gaining of additional documentation, or accessing government services as a citizen.
I think this compromise would be acceptable to a broad swath of society. But the Democrats will never go for it, because they are interested in Vote Fraud. That is what this whole business is about for them, nothing more.
What do other countries do about driver’s licenses for long term visitors? Has anyone here gotten a foreign license? What was the process?
Why would an illegal alien want a driver's license [with his address and picture on it] that shows that he is illegally in this country? Couldn't that same document be used to round them up? Could the license be used as a document to deny employment? What are the benefits to the illegals that would induce them to apply for such a license?
Most of the American people don't support issuing any drivers license to illegals. Under the Spitzer plan, there is a specific driver's license that would only be issued to illegals under a three tier system. Despite having a license exclusively for illegals, 72% of New Yorkers are against it.
Foreign non-citizens get drivers licenses all the time. If I go to visit a foreign country, I can get a license to drive in that country, if I have my US/State issued license. Not EVERYWHERE, but most places, at least in the Western World, most if not all of Europe.
I don’t think ILLEGAL ALIENS should get ANYTHING. Legal VISITORs and tourists, legal immigrants YES.
