What do other countries do about driver’s licenses for long term visitors? Has anyone here gotten a foreign license? What was the process?

I was licensed to drive in five foreign countries. All required me to have a work or residence permit plus US Passport. None allowed me to register to vote.
No illegal would be allowed to vote.

In India, about thirty years ago, you carried your American Driver's License, along with a printed ID card from the Indian Government that gave you permission to drive using a foreign license. They didn't issue you an ID, however. In Europe, I think you just use your US ID. In Kenya, about 25 years ago, they issued a printed card that you used with your US license. I don't know if it was the same card as was issued to Kenyans or not. But somebody would force you to stop and stick a gun in your ear about every 50 km when you were on the road, and none of them was ever interested in seeing your Drivers License. More of a cash transaction, really.

In Somalia, nobody had any documentation of any kind, even the locals. You just tried to avoid accidents and didn't stop for anything.

What was the process? ================= Years ago I lived in Germany and in order to drive I had to obtain what was called an International Drivers License and purchase insurance. With that license I was able to drive all over Europe. Only German citizens had German licenses. I don't know if that has changed but it worked well then.
