Oh, btw, have you by chance ever heard of a plane of the name Comet?
“- de Havilland Comet????”
Very good! Now, let’s keep our fingers crossed that the A380 does not follow it’s dismal and tragic legacy. Personally, I don’t intend to ride on the A380 for a few years...
You forgot UK.
You tell your people: Keep building kick-ass weaponry. The world will leave you be.
Now, you wouldn't be referring to a certain organization whose initials are U and N, would you?
- In the case of Sweden, this defense strategy helped us maintain our neutrality through a very troublesome time in European history, the 20th century. The price of launching a military attack against Sweden would’ve been too high.
During WW2, Hitler was happy as long as we sold him iron ore and Stalin was happy as long as we didn’t send regular troops to aid Finland (although some Swedish volunteers fought together with the Finns against the Soviet invaders).
But having fearsome conventional armies and even tons of nuclear weapons is, evidently, not enough to secure peace and the future of civilization. That’s what the WOT is all about.
“Now, you wouldn’t be referring to a certain organization whose initials are U and N, would you?”
- Yes and no. UN achieves very little given its gargantuan budget and its formal role in international politics.
Today, the UN is mostly about empty declarations, resolutions and investigations etc.
But does it have to be this way?
A lot of people slander organizations like the UN and the EU, but I think it ought to be remembered that these organizations are what we make of them. I for one could easily imagine a Conservative EU where Socialism is a thing of the past, work ethics are restored and the true potential of the European economy is realized, as well as a UN that serves as a forum for democratic nations who have not given up on the true goals of mankind.
‘People want to get to their destinations on time without any headaches, nothing more, nothing less’
Yeah but there is no suggestion that A380 is any slower than the usual aircraft. So passenger needs will shift over time, and they would seek a better experience rather than just travel from A to B in the cheapest flight. In other words this is adding value to an existing product, consumer demand would grow out of it. American consumers wont be leading the demand, it would come from outside in Asia/Europe etc where air travel is more sophisticated.
The evidence is that it is indeed a better flying experience rather than the flying cattle car experience you talk about. Worlds leading Airlines like Singapore airlines, Emirates etc have put their money on A380 and you can be sure that these companies know how to invest their money properly.
- Today, a ride with an A380 is of course to be considered a luxury. Few others than sophisticated aristocrats of the Old World and all sorts of multinational CEOs and other leading businessmen belong to the clientele targeted by the companies who order them.
However, when the focus no longer is on the crème de la crème (out of pure, simple economical reasons), I believe upper middle class people from all over the world will be prepared to pay the higher price as they will fancy these comfy and roomy planes.
Especially such Americans I think.
In America, a lot of people believe Big Is Better. Nothing wrong with that, but this is more of a dogma in the US than it is elsewhere. For instance, many well off Americans often buy a nice SUV while well off Europeans and Asians primarily will go for a luxury make.
crème de la crème = crème de la crème.
