The destroyer USS Porter enters port at Souda Bay, Greece, in 2006.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Navy warship fired on and sank two skiffs used by pirates Sunday to hijack a merchant vessel off the coast of Somalia, U.S. officials said Monday.

At the request of Somalia's government, a second U.S. warship, the destroyer USS Arleigh Burke, is now shadowing the merchant ship inside Somali waters, the officials said.

In recent years, warships have stayed outside the 12-mile limit when chasing pirates.

In this case, the request of Somalia’s government also means we had permission to enter their territorial waters. It’s not like they demanded we do it or required us to.

Can you run another line showing rising temperatures and number of gerbils being kept in Hollywood homes since the 1970s and lay that over the increasing number of pirates?

I have only been on a DD once, many years ago, so I don't know what they may have available, but I would think a Ma Deuce or a M-60 would be most cost effective.

OTOH the gunnery practice for the main mount would be valuable, and a lot more satisfying.

Pirates are not a Somalia concern, maritime safety affects all countries. I’m glad that Somalia allowed us into their sovereign territory to deal with the problem.

I checked out what the Arleigh Burke Class has mounted. I would assume the 20mm sea whizz would be usable for this application, and that would ruin just about anyone's day.

Cool.

The weapons control systems include a SWG-1A for Harpoon, SWG-3 forTomahawk, Mk 99 Mod 3 missile fire control system, GWS34 Mod 0 gun fire control system and Mk 116 Mod 7 fire control system for anti-submarine systems.

WEAPONS

The ships are armed with 56 Raytheon Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a combination of land-attack (TLAM) missiles with a Tercom Aided Navigation System, and anti-ship missiles with inertial guidance. The Standard SM-2MR Block 4 surface-to-air missiles with command / inertial guidance remain at the centre of the Aegis system. Both Tomahawk and Standard missiles are fired from two Lockheed Martin Mk 41 vertical launch systems.

Anyone with any thoughts at what the ordinance would have been used?

Hopefully something that left bite sized pieces for the fish

too bad we didn't have one of the Iowa-class battleships park at 13 miles out and lob shells into Mogadishu some years back.

Right out of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness"!

From my reading of the article — the pirates SUCCEEDED..
They had ALREADY hijacked the ship before their “skiffs” had been sunk...

The pirates now have the ship full of benzene...
THAT would make a spectacular explosion....

How we get the ship back, without blowing it up is going to be a challenge..
Cut it off or disable the ship and kill EVERYONE who resists our boarding and retaking the ship.....

Or they could fire some shells from the 5" gun which explode over target and rain down on the open boats.
