A bitter fight is taking place behind the scenes over Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee.
Influential conservatives are clashing over whether Mr. Huckabee is capable of keeping evangelicals from fleeing the GOP to form a third party or if he's too liberal fiscally for the Republican electorate.
The battle is bubbling into the public arena, fueled by fears that a three-way race could hand the presidency to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton or another Democrat, and by murmurs of Mr. Huckabee as a vice-presidential candidate on the party's ticket.
"We called him a pro-life, pro-gun liberal, when I was in the state legislature and he was governor," said Randy Minton, chairman of the Arkansas chapter of Phyllis Schlafly's national Eagle Forum.
Mr. Minton voices the concerns of many conservatives that while Mr. Huckabee governed as a social conservative in opposing abortion and same-sex "marriage," he was a treacherous liberal on taxes, social welfare spending and illegal immigration.

Of course they do. And it's OK by me. I'd rather my enemy misunderestimate me than recognize my strength.
Based on the MSM’s low opinion of evangelicals as bible thumping rubes, it’s a miracle they haven’t tried to pass off Jesse Jackson as a conservative because he is a man of the cloth.
Hunter would be a terrible choice for VP because he brings nothing to the ticket.
If Huckabee lasts long enough to become a focus of tough questions, I expect he will lose whatever luster he has.
He isn’t liberal enough on social issues to attract the left and he is too liberal on immigration, spending and class warfare rants to attract the right.
He might come away with 10 percent of a general election — less than Perot did — and I think he is enough of a Republican not to run just to split the vote.
Give 'em time! They just haven't thought of it yet. Actually though, they are trying to do this with Hllary Clinton and her "spirituality" and her "Methodist upbringing," as if the psychopathic babykilling skank was anything but a flaming atheist.
Yeah, well that little minor thing about sticking sharp objects into the skulls of live crying infants might put a dent in the Socialists goal of winning over religious voters.
In their favor, communists do support Gumbint alms for the poor. Jesus would be proud. I think.
What the heck do I know? I’m just a jackass with a modem.
I’m certainly not qualified to speak for Him.
I doubt she is an atheist. We wouldn’t have her.
Please try to keep in mind there are atheist Republicans and spiritual Dems. Spirituality is no guarantee of morality, self-sufficiency, small government, respect, or good work ethic.
I always vote Republican, but I haven’t been happy about the Republican candidate since 1984. Bush 1 - voted for him, holding my nose. Dole - held my nose. Bush 2 - held my nose. I can’t see any one of the current candidates who’ll allow me to breath through my nostrils.
He is anti gun and pro abortion. I will never vote for him.
ROFL...
Y'all are starting to believe your own spin. Bad sign.
How clever of you. And just who are you supporting again? Enlighten us. I know you have worked in politics for decades by the clever repartee you show.
Not bad but not too many people know Hunter east of the Miss. R. At least Fred has some TV recognition if nothing else. And he is a Southerner.
That's flattering. It really is.
Actually a few decades ago, I was a pimply faced teenager looking for a Junior prom date.
I swear on my Grandmothers grave that I am just a jackass with a modem like you with a 9-5 job sitting on their computer in their pajamas.
I should be getting paid for this. I'm too talented to be doing this for free. If your candidate will pay me some serious money, I'll be happy to shill for them and slaughter the opposition.
As for my candidate, I haven't decided, but there will be a live thread on FR attended by nobody when I make my endorsement. I like any candidate who promises to leave me and American citizens the hell alone domestically and kill the enemies abroad who want to blow up me and my family.
The chief of the “3rd-party” leaders have said they think Romney would be OK. Maybe they wouldn’t bring all of the guys with them, but enough to avoid a 3rd party.
If Romney is the nominee, there will NOT be a 3rd-party of social conservatives.
There most certainly will. Folks like me, and there are more than a few, will not be part of a national party led by Mitt Romney.
The chief of the 3rd-party leaders have said they think Romney would be OK.
We have no "chief." Sorry. You might buy off a few "leaders," but the vast bulk of Christian conservatives are not going to be fooled by the liar from Massachusetts, ever.
Good grief! That's not "fear", that's "paralyzing horror"!
I hear you. When that was first mentioned I crapped in my pants. Then I spent 2 days under the covers curled up in the fetal position with my thumb in my mouth crying uncontrollably.
Afterwards, I decided to stop whining and try to do something about it.
It wouldn’t matter, since no one from Massachusetts will become president any time soon.
Based on the onslaught of lies you spew about Huckabee the moment he rises in the polls, one can conclude you're downright terrified at the thought of him beating your guy.
What's the matter, got an ax to grind because your guy is underwhemingly on the campaign trail?
