Hard to believe there are still pirates in the world. Even when I was a kid I thought they were the stuff of legends.

I’m still amazed they don’t put guns on the decks of these ships.

A brace of 20mm guns is enough. How hard is it to mount those?

Of all the nations on the Earth, I think the Phillipines have the best punishment for pirates. The law on the books says “electrocuted until they catch fire.”

How about the US Navy quietly creating a Qship that looks like a normal tanker/freighter, but contains a couple of squads of heavily armed Marines along with a couple of concealed M2’s and a 40mm cannon? Then send it in trolling in these areas.

Dangerous Waters is a book that shows the 21st century pirate problem is increasing, not abating.

Piracy are getting worse, especially around the Muslim countries - although there is a problem in this hemisphere as well. Some parts of the global oceans and waterways are essentially lawless. Even the largest ships, such as super tankers, are habitually in danger and frequently boarded and robbed by bands of pirates. Sometimes the ships are actually hijacked, the crew murdered or put in slavery, and the ships turned into false-flagged "ghost" ships, run by criminal syndicates for stolen or dangerous cargo. They can also be used as part of an Al Qaeda Navy.

Heaven help you if you are on a private boat trying to navigate some of these waters!

Boarding a large vessel that doesn't want to be boarded isn't so easy. Even if the small craft gets close enough to attach grappling hooks, 6 inch water cannons aimed into the small craft should be able to ruin the pirates day.

What's probably needed on the merchant vessels is an ability to remotely operate the water cannons in order to protect the crew from direct fire.

They should take THEIR problem to the UN. Maybe THEY will get better results for their ship/cargo/crew than we did with our 3000 civilian graves.

Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons dont thunder, theres nothin to plunder
Im an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
---Jimmy Buffett, A Pirate Looks At Forty

Hmmm. Looks like Jimmy Buffett was wrong. There still are pirates plundering.
