Many people, knowing that Im Jewish, have asked me if I was deeply offended by Ann Coulters observation that Jews are unperfected Christians. I could tell that I disappointed them when I said that I wasnt even slightly upset.
For one thing, I am not religious. What people do or dont believe, theologically speaking, is none of my business, except in the case of Islamics who want the rest of us dead or at least kneeling to Mecca.
But how is it my concern what people believe if it gets them through the bad times or it helps them to lead decent lives? I think the 10 Commandments and the Golden Rule make a lot of sense, but I dont feel the need to believe that Noah set sail with the worlds largest zoo or that Jonah set up housekeeping in the belly of a whale. In the immortal words of Ira Gershwin, Im of the opinion that it aint necessarily so. But, heck, Ive been wrong before and I have two divorces to prove it.
Although Ive never met Ms. Coulter, Im a fan of hers. Not only do I nearly always agree with the woman, but I think shes an awfully good writer. Shes got a nice style -- straightforward and extremely sprightly. Occasionally, she even makes me laugh, which is something that the other pundits quite wisely never even attempt.
Unlike most of the non-religious people I know, I am not opposed to religion. In fact, I tend to prefer believers to agnostics and atheists. They dont seem to be nearly as self-righteous and self-important. Perhaps its unavoidable that if a man doesnt believe in a superior power, it tends to make him view himself as the center of the universe.
Some time ago, I wrote a piece in which I contended that there were large numbers of Muslims who thought that blowing up innocent women and children was a sure path to paradise, whereas Christians believed that a lifetime of good deeds was a better way. I realized that I was using shorthand to get my message across, but I was hardly prepared for all the e-mail I received from disgruntled Christians, all of whom wanted to remind me that good deeds meant nothing, and that the only way to get past the Pearly Gates was to accept Jesus Christ as ones savior.
I didnt object to their setting me straight, but I must confess I found the notion that if, on their death beds, Charles Manson and Osama bin Laden accepted Jesus into their hearts, they would get to Heaven, but my grandparents wouldnt, rather unsavory. But, as I said, what other folks believe is their business.
Its by their actions that I judge people. And in my experience, American Christians are essentially kind, tolerant, admirable people. I did not take Ann Coulters statement as an example of hate speech. Frankly, I dont believe she has an anti-Semitic bone in her body. What I do find bizarre is that so many Jews, who side with the Arabs against Israel and whose children applauded Ahmadinejad at Columbia University, are demanding Coulters head on a pike.
Finally, we shouldnt forget that Coulter has a new book out. By uttering those few rather benign words on Donny Deutschs show, she has garnered a million dollars worth of free publicity, guaranteeing that If Democrats Had Any Brains, Theyd Be Republicans will be a blockbuster.
Well, inasmuch as I have a book, The Secrets of Their Success, a collection of interviews Ive conducted with the likes of Gerald Ford, Billy Wilder, Art Linkletter, Henry Mancini, Ginger Rogers and Jerry Herman, coming out soon, Ive been much impressed with her marketing skills.
In fact, if Im lucky enough to get on Mr. Deutschs show, I think I just might suggest that Christians are unperfected Jews.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
It is a shame many Jews have turned their backs on the Almighty. But then again, many Gentiles have as well.
I find it interesting how so many of the right get upset at her because she’s not all nicey nice when discussion the bizarro concoction of anti-Americanism and every misanthropic, mass murder oriented, socialist utopianistic idiocy that’s dribbled out of europe in the last century.
They act as if the preceding decades of endlessly giving ground to the irrationals hasn’t happened. Playing nicey nice with what amounts to a pathological ideology gains nothing but slow, grinding defeat.
I have always found it wise not to confuse a religious program with a spiritual one.
Count how often “I” occurs in his post?
It proves his point. LOL
If this weren't such a flattering column on way too thin Ann, I would think it inappropriate to mention her bones.
Wouldn’t ya just love to see an unedited debate with Ann and the smartest woman in the world?
No holds barred.
She would eat Mrs. Clinton for lunch and spit her out. Make fun of Clintons lies deceit and illegalities.
Mr Prelutsky has that wrong.
Only believers in Christ are Christians. A non-believing anything is not yet a Christian in any way, shape, or form.
Any believer in Jesus, based on Paul's words in Romans 11 and at the end of Galations, could be METAPHORICALLY called a "perfected Jew."
And, I'm fairly certain that was the point that Ann was making.
Mr Prelutsky's article was a kind one, and aside from the above observation, which I consider to be an inaccurate reporting of Coulter's point, it was basically a good one.
What I think is the best line of this article.
Why do you claim to be a Jew, when you have turned away from Yahweh?
One thing many Jews and Christians have in common is that they are basically Jews and Christians in name only. Only when that reach their mid 30’s to 40’s do they suddenly feel a need to “get religious”. I don’t know how old this guy is, but he may be a “late bloomer”...............
God Bless Bert Prelutsky
“If this weren’t such a flattering column on way too thin Ann, I would think it inappropriate to mention her bones.”
Is the word flat-tering appropriate?
This position is typical of Pauline Christians who've never read their Bible. One is saved by grace through faith in Christ and one cannot enter the kingdom without it, but one is judged by works at the end of days.
There is only ONE late bloomer!!!!!
Perhaps we could make a project out of collecting video statements made by Coulter, match them up as answers to video statements made by Mrs. Clinton, and make the "debate" available on Youtube.
Either that, or Ann (and/or Rush Limbaugh) could do a parody youtube video of her (or him) standing behind a podium "debating" Hillary Clinton (using video clips of her standing behind a podium during one of her speeches).
I think it would be an absolute RIOT and it would generate "buzz" like you wouldn't believe!!!
Sweet idea..i’d like to see that on YouTube,or breitbarttv,or anyplace.
Well, get to it then!
Wow, didn’t know you existed!...........
