Jerry Ford wasn't sure Hillary Clinton could be elected President, but he was absolutely certain which Republican had the strongest shot at stopping her: Rudy Giuliani.
"That would be a great contest between Hillary and Rudy," the 92-year-old former President told a reporter in May 2006.
"I think Giuliani is an electrifying guy," he added. "He's a great speaker. He's had a good record of winning in New York City, and he can be tough."
Ford had gotten to know the former mayor at various political and corporate events over the years - both were members of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation, for example - and often spoke admiringly of Giuliani's performance in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
He thought so highly of Giuliani, in fact, that when speculating in 2004 about potential replacements for Vice President Cheney in the unlikely event President Bush decided to make a change, Ford put Giuliani at the top of his list.
Officially, he remained scrupulously neutral in the 2008 GOP primary contest. A few months before his death in December 2006, however, Ford was asked by an old friend to predict who the Republican nominee would be.
He smiled and replied: "Well, if they want to win, Giuliani. He's really good, he's articulate - he's just a leader."
Horse droppings. My non-membership in the GOP does not mean I'm not part of the Republican base. Actually, I do have to register as a Republican by election day anyway, so there. It means I'm a conservative, and it just so happens to be that most of the conservatives-libertarians running for office run as Republicans, whom I support.
If you eventually choose to support the GOP candidate, that's fine.
As long as it isn't Rudy, and if the GOP stops pissing on Paul, and as long as a strong, young conservative VP is chosen by Fred or Romney, then I will support the Republican .
But frankly until you join the GOP, your comments about my party should be ignored and dismissed
Refrain from criticizing the GOP? I shall do no such thing. My vote & donation dollars gives me the right to stick my nose into the affairs of the GOP.
they might as well be coming from a liberal or democrat. Because liberals, democrats and yourself have a lot more in common with each other then with me -- that's because I belong to the GOP, and you and they do not.
Oooh, aren't your precious. I bet you have a star on your belly like that old Dr. Suess cartoon too.
Two reasons for his withdrawal, IMO. 1) He wasn't gaining any steam against Hillary and 2) his affair with Judy had just been exposed by the media, followed by a press conference where he announced he was going to seek a divorce (the first his wife heard about it). Then he tried to kick his wife out of Gracie Mansion which didn't go over too well. Soon after, he announced the cancer and the media backed off, somewhat, but his numbers continued to fall. Bottom line (IMO): he knew he would lose against Hillary if he continued.
I said "spineless" because he weasled out of the race at the 48th hour, leaving the GOP high and dry. I can think of lots of other words to describe his behavior, all of which point to a narcissistic man of low character, seeking power, who hit the road when the going got tough.
Ya mean he didn't really march in all those gay parades, or praise Margaret Sanger during NARAL speeches, or jump on the platform calling for gun control with Brady at his side? Ya mean those pics were fake?????
Yeah, right.
oh i’d vote for him, with a barf bag in hand, but he still could not win.
and you will look to blame someone else for Hillary winning the WH, should Rudy be the nominee, thereby innoculating yourself from blame for banking on a predicted loser. got yourself covered all the way around, don’t you? it’s always someone ELSE’s fault; not those who are banking on Rudy as the savior, when he CANNOT WIN.
Have you ever seen such a sudden rewrite of history unfold like this? I mean sudden. Like, none of use were here posting on any of the Giuliani file threads? This is amazing, I mean, really amazing!
I will take anything Extremely Extreme Extremist says with much more credibility then anything you ever post. You are defending and painting a pretty picture of a StonewallVet that praises freaks that masturbate in front of churches as dignified.

Again, you falsely equate membership in the GOP with having to have a say in its affairs. But if you want to have your little echo chamber and promote the same-old quasi-socialist status quo and ignore the thousands of conservatives, libertarians, and independents who have the real ideas, be my guest.
It is likely that Ron Paul will run 3rd party on the libertarian line
Paul has no intentions on running as a 3rd party or independent candidate, but he's single-handedly saving the GOP from extinction. Now if your party wants to ignore him that's fine. But you're going to need his endorsement of the nominee and his supporters in the general.
The grasp on truth.
It is amazing, isn’t it? Funny thing, in a week they’ll be posting the same thing on another thread. And in a month, same thing. Facts must be ignored and the myths must prevail! All in an effort to sell Rudy.
Thank you for asking. This perfectly illustrates my point.
Please tell us all where I did that?
You’re right, EEE. Regardless, this is a Conservative forum, not a GOP forum. You shouldn’t have to be having this argument.
I’ve been GOP all my life, but given their recent performance as a party, putting up liberal candidates while blatantly undermining the campaigns of conservatives, I’m thinking of going Independent, as well. I’ve never voted democrat and don’t plan to in the future, but maybe if R’s leave the party it will 1) give the party “leaders” a strong message that they are on a path to destruction or 2) give birth to a new party that actually embraces those ideals that served as the basis of the GOP.
I don’t understand folks demanding allegiance to a party candidate who doesn’t support 80% of the GOP platform. Does not compute.
Oh, geez! It’s the first time I read the stuff at your link.
There is NO excuse for that!
Given a choice between Rino Rudy, Hitlary, and a 3rd party Ron Paul I will gladly vote for Ron Paul. And for the record right now I am supporting Hunter, with Huckabee, Thompson, and Paul in that order behind him.
But why put party obedience over ideology though? The vast majority of Republican party members are rank-and-file country club types who'll vote for anyone that has an R tattooed to their chest.
He's left the door open to a 3rd party run. It makes sense for him though, why let the grass roots movement that's been started go to waste. And in a race against Rudy and Hillary, Ron Paul would be the only pure anti-war choice in the field.
He said no such thing. Please find the link. He has stated several times, most recently during an interview with CBS, that he has no plans for a 3rd party run.
Based on the tone of your post, I get the feeling that you don't want Paul to do a 3rd party run
Because I want Paul to continue to rebuild the GOP. He's bringing in new voters, libertarians, constitutionalists, and traditional liberals back into the GOP, and whoever's nominated, most of these folks will support the GOP in the general. This is of course assuming that the GOP lets Paul speak at the convention, and in return Paul endorses the GOP nominee.
You obviously know nothing about EEE.
The trash spewed toward long time conservative freepers by the "Newbies for Rudy" clan are a disgusting demonstration of how low supporters will go to sell Rudy. You aren't going to endear anyone with that kind of behavior, let alone convince them to vote for a liberal.
Playing hard nose. LOL that one was a real bitch slap. Left a big mark! :)
