Song Links Saggy Pants to Being Gay
The Bryant Park Project, October 26, 2007 · A new campaign by the city of Dallas targets the hip-hop style of wearing your pants low enough that your boxers are showin — and part of your posterior, too.
The campaign has a signature song, "Pull Your Pants Up," by Dooney Da' Priest, that links so-called saggin' with being gay. After the BPP blogged NPR's original report on the public service announcement, listeners objected to lyrics they consider homophobic.
Andrew Jones commented on a line about living "on the down low" — common slang for a man who has secret sexual encounters with other men.''It's cute when homophobia is part of a citywide campaign," Jones wrote. "Shaming the youth by calling them gay, love that from the government."
An accompanying billboard says it's rude to be "walking around showin' your behind to other dudes." The song's refrain is "Be a real man — pull your pants up."
In an interview with a local television station, Dooney explained that saggin' comes from jail, where he argued that showing your boxers has a very particular meaning. "You're letting another man know that you're available," Dooney said.
Mark Anthony Neal, professor of black popular culture in the Department of African American Studies at Duke University, parses the lyrics and explains why they'll hit some young men hard.

If that perspective catches on it's the most sure-fire way to get both the thugs and the wannabes to pull up their pants.
It’s tough finding ways to encourage good behavior while trying to eliminate the culture that justifies it. Calling people queers to help reduce vulgarity is an interesting approach. Who knows...?
Who cares if they want to look like what they are showing? Like the Elvis sideburns of the 70's, it'll come back to haunt them.
I read the same on FR the other day.

I saw that happen on COPS...and it was funny, right up there with the shoes with the lights on the back of them every time the “suspect” took a step, the locator beacon activated...

“I wear my pants like this...for easy access, baby.”
There was some police dashcam video that showed two thugs running from a convenience store robbery. Both kept falling down due to their stylish dress. It was hilarious.
no wonder so many hip hop’n rappers are in jail or the morgue, they can’t run with their pants damn near ‘round their knees

This song actually is number one on the charts. While I’m a Christian, I’m young, and I admit listening to rap because I like the beat. There actually is a dance to the Soulja Boy, and the beat of the song is good. I would like it if they cleaned up the lyrics, though. Most songs, while having a different beat, have the same message. The guys are at a club trying to get some girl to come back to their “crib”, sleeping around, pimping, that sort of thing. Women are not portrayed in a good light. I know whites listen to this to, but a lot of young black males look up to these rappers and follow the message these songs portray. It’s not good. Hopefully, at some point, a positive black male role model will move into the hip hop scene, become popular with the kids, and help transform it.
As far as the pants, my cousin works for a politician, and they work with the police sometimes. The reason why a lot of these guys wear baggy pants and long white shirts is because it makes them all look similar in the case of a crime. For example, if a crime is committed, the police will ask a witness who they saw. A witness will say for example, a black male, long white shirt, baggy pants. Well, there are tons of them. Some white guys are wearing the same thing. As far as the pants, apparantly one of the reasons they wear them baggy to be in “solidarity” with their brothers in prison. Prison pants often don’t fit and slide down. They wear their pants that way to show support for them. Another reason is so people will be unable to tell if they have a gun. A gun can be hidden easily in baggy pants. Of course I think it is ridiculous to dress for the possibility that one might be at the center of a crime, to show support for criminals, or to carry a likely illegal weapon. (Sigh) What a world we live in. My cousin did say that one positive thing about the baggy pants (ignoring the fact the police aren’t sure if they have a weapon) is that when they try to run, their pants fall down. They have to keep pulling their pants up while they run. It slows them down.
I hate that song, and I showed my students my 90’s comp. of rap that contrasts with the absolute C-rap that these kids listen to today.

I need to be careful though, a couple of girls in my class told me that they got pregnant and didnt know what to do. I said, you could have solved with one action - and then I crossed my legs. These kids dont even know that they don’t NEED TO HAVE SEX. And soulja boy needs to get shot for his crappy music.

It’s funny how alot black rap songs nowadays sounds alot like an Eminem Song. Whitey used to try to sound black and now the blacks try to sound like whitey.
