GRAND FORKS, N.D. The state Board of Higher Education settled a lawsuit with the NCAA over the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux nickname, giving the school three years to get tribal approval to keep it.
The board voted unanimously Friday to approve the settlement after a closed-door briefing from Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. If the school does not get approval from the Spirit Lake Sioux and Standing Rock Sioux tribes by Nov. 30, 2010, it will have to change to a new name and logo.
"The settlement confirms that the Sioux people and no one else should decide whether and how their name should be used,'' Bernard Franklin, an NCAA senior vice president, said in a statement.

If the nickname is changed, UND would have to remove most of its Indian imagery on its Grand Forks campus. It could keep historical items and items embedded in the architecture, under the agreement.
Officials have estimated UND's Ralph Engelstad Arena has at least 3,000 Fighting Sioux logos, including a 10-foot sketch of an Indian head embedded in the granite floor.

Change it to the “Fighting Indians.” If there’s any flap about it, tell them to “Sioux me.”
Is this the end of Sioux City ?
Not all Indians are on this PC bandwagon. Iâm Indian and see nothing wrong with the team names such as Warriors, Braves, etc. Iâd call them a compliment. I was upset years ago when Stanford took away the Stanford Indian and let Prince Lightfoot go. He was there and for free for over twenty years. Now Stanford is a color, and I believe some kind of tree. So stupid. I can see how “Redskins” would bother some, but to me it’s all in fun and sports and doesn’t get under my skin. Matter of fact I like the Redskins and the Atlanta Braves too.
Furthermore, the name “Sioux” is North American French, not native at all. The tribes referred to themselves as “Dakotah” or “Lakotah.” This case has absolutely no validity.
I'm from there. We called it a variety of things, but mostly we called it a sh_thole.

I guess no one is asking “Is this heaven” anymore. LOL
One proposal that Congress didn't adopt, before ND achieved statehood, was for it to be named Lincoln. Maybe they could revive that idea and call SD "Reagan."
The Florida State Seminoles are allowed by the PC types to keep their Indian name, but Illinois and UND are being forced to change. I think in most cases the university administrations are happy to cave in to any left-wing demand, and it is the alumni who resist.
There are so many people trying to change our history the American Indian will become a footnote as more people whose ancestors did not have a part in the building of this country continue coming to America. These mascots force people to consider that at one time there were these various tribes of red men that inhabited this land and played a major role in building the west.
Liberals want every non white person to be poor indigenous people who need their help.
I’ve heard the perjorative “Sewer City” used at times.

It’s my understanding that the Seminole tribe considers it an honor for Florida State to use their name and wants it to continue. That doesn’t stop the PC types from trying to change it, acting as if the Seminoles should be offended, even if they’re not.

I remember reading that Ralph Engelstad was ready to turn out the lights in the place if the university ever changed its nickname. Ought to be interesting.
just fyi. Ralph is dead now.
i dont have the details and maybe all i’m doing is spreading false info but i believe the Arena isnt University owned. its managed for them by a private group. its an unusual arrangement i believe.
