BATON ROUGE - As the California wildfires continued to rage Thursday, so too did the political feud between President Bush and Gov. Kathleen Blanco that has smoldered since the federal government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina.
The latest flare-up came when Bush, while touring the California disaster area, took an apparent swipe at Blanco's post-Katrina leadership as he complimented California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"It makes a significant difference when you have somebody in the statehouse willing to take the lead," Bush said, according to the Associated Press.
The president's statement, coming from a White House that seems determined to avoid a repeat in California of the public-relations disaster that followed Katrina, brought a swift response from Blanco.
In a statement forwarded by her press office, Blanco noted that it took federal forces nearly a week to arrive in Louisiana after the storm. "I was the only game in town, leading for nearly a week without the president's help," Blanco said.
"Of all the lessons learned from Katrina now being put into place in California, I would hope the one he would remember is that politics has no place in any disaster," she added, before taking a shot at the slow manner in which promised federal aid has been delivered.

Exactly. And I’ll bet we won’t be hearing about looters running amok in San Diego or Malibu. Sorry, no iconic photos of ‘looter guy’ types from these widfires. Civility ruled the day.
The followup and placement of these people and how well the insurance companies come through will be absolutley crucial, though.
It’s just too bad that GWB has waited seven years to start giving it back to these lying dims!!
The gov had more than a week’s warning plus more than a week of pleading to do something from the WH. “Only game in town,” to pull the covers over her head, maybe...
The libs have a weekly program called Kville, which is about the post-katrina life in New Orleans. The show is blatantly anti-bush and constantly reminds the viewer of Bush's alledged failures.
To the author of the article: you mention the federal government’s slow response, be aware that the feds have to respond to the request of state leadership (Gog. Blanco), not the emergency itself. Get a copy of a text called the “United States Constitution” and you’ll understand why the feds can’t just march in and take over.
Blanco was slow to respond.
Your statement applies to conservatives commenting on leftists and liberals. That’s “taking a shot.”
When the left does the same, even (especially) when it’s a complete lie or personal attack, it isn’t “taking a shot” but “speaking truth to power.”
You’re right. See my post 25.
Bush lied, people died, Halliburton
No doubt, just as Haley Barbour took care of his people. The disparity between the republican governors and the democrat governors is huge.
Bush never mentioned Blanco’s name. So why did she recognize herself? The fed gov is not supposed to be the first responder and she knows it. Those people had five days warning to get out of NO. I watched the weather myself and heard Bush himself warn them to get out a couple of days before. I am sick of these people and the media.
If she’d taken the lead, as she said, she wouldn’t have been afraid to run for re-election...
Wayyyyyy too late.
...'bout 2 years too late.
Apparently, a guilty conscience needs no accuser.
I thought that would be K-villes agenda, thats why I never wasted a second watching it. Thanks for confirming.
I am so sick of hearing about Katrina and anything about it that I would probably vomit before the opening credits were over anyway.
The Kali wildfires don't quite have that sort of influence. Never-the-less, Bush is right about Arnie having a better take charge local presence than the Blank One. I also don't think the administration or FEMA had to beg Arnie to ask for help so they could mobilize federal assets.
7 actually...
If the President would have used language like this from day 1 of his administration instead of the “new tone” crap, he would be sitting pretty right now. That’s why Reagan was loved by some many. He was not a mean guy, but when he got spit upon by the media or the Rats, he’d let them have it in a “nice” way. Calling them out like Bush did with Blanko is exactly what Reagan would have done.
Kathy Blanco’s leadership involved mainly crying on TV. Literally.
This is another myth constantly spouted on these threads. Katrina wasn’t even formed a week before it hit. Everyone knows Blanco is a clueless idiot with no leadership skills. No need to make things up.
I guess you see what you want to see. I have watched the show every week and have seen none of that.
