Mrs. Bush's People Lied (Laura Bush dons Muslim headscarf)
Debbie Schlussel ^ | 10/25/2007 | Debbie Schlussel

When I first wrote about First Lady Laura Bush's latest Breast Cancer Awareness Tour of the Extremist Islamic World (redundant), I noted that Mrs. Bush's PR team told the press that she would not, under any circumstances, don an Islamic headscarf or anything of the sort:

"They do not expect nor encourage it," of Western visitors at official meetings, said Bush's spokeswoman, Sally McDonough. "As members of the official traveling party, we will not need to wear any head scarves or abayas at any point."

I didn't buy it. And, as usual, my instincts were correct. This is Sheikha Laura, yesterday, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (thanks to reader "greatcometof1577").

If the women were supplying the IEDs or promoting the death of our troops, I would buy your point. But that does not appear to be the case. Maybe you need to go to the distinction school.

What if someone gave your wife a swastika or a hammer and sickle? A really nice embroidered one?

Or one made of doughy goodness?

Thousands of Islamic women and men--many of them the sort that know hot to strap a bomb pack onto a child--see Laura's gesture as craven bow to the traditions of Islam. This isn't a chit-chat with an Amish housewife, or an audience with the Pope, or a cultural exchange with a small knot of defeated Commanches on the reservation. It's a photo op right in the middle of a hot war with 1.1 billion Muslims.
The Bush family does some good things; this wasn't one of them.

Anybody who has problems with Debbie Schlussel ought to take time to go downthread to read her tribute to her father, who died last month. She was very fortunate to have such a father, who was a patriot, a conservative, and a faithful Jew (not necessarily in that order), and I suspect she is to a great extent her father’s daughter.

If Ms. Schlussel is critical toward those who compromise with radical Islam, or appear to do so, that is because she knows history and the results of compromise.

I understand your sentiment and I’m not passionate about this. But have you studied how the Muslims use propaganda in their countries? Anything we do that shows tolerance of Muslim, is broadcast and taught by them as incursions of their extremism into our land.

The White House should not even be celebrating Ramadan. We first need to defeat, utterly, extremist doctrine, then we can show tolerance and acceptance.

Was it a minor issue when Pelosi went to Syria and sat quietly wearing the headscarf? No. Beyond it being wrongful statesmanship, it provided a photo op that the Muzzies are using against us to show how divided (how they have divided) our leadership.

If one is going as a visitor or representative of State in a friendly capacity it behooves one to act appropriately.

Even Apostle Paul tells one to eat without inquiry! Didn't anyone teach you that?

They have a funny definition of what a “lie” is. You cannot lie about something in the future.

The picture of the First Lady sitting between two women convinced/forced to wear that ridiculous ‘headgear’ is one that highlights just how screwed up the Muslim belief system truly is as it relates to women.

I’ll miss this First Lady after January of 09.

Accepting Islam? Sure it does...accepting a gift from breast cancer survivors and wearing it briefly (pink ribbons attached) means she accepts Islam-—and I’m the next Pope LOL

Good point; we know the answer to that one.

"...Laura is not Catholic, yet, she donned a scarf the entire time while meeting with the Pope..."

When I was a lad my uncle, who is an Episcopal minister, was in a group that was granted an audience with Pope. He relayed to me that he kneeled and kissed the Pope's ring. I asked if his actions violated a fundamental tenet of his faith (which, c'mon, was obvious, even to a 15 yr-old).

His response was "Yeah, but it was the Pope, man!"

Probably not - but then again, wearing a scarf isn’t against the Presbetyrian religion, AFAIK.
