Mrs. Bush's People Lied (Laura Bush dons Muslim headscarf)
Debbie Schlussel ^ | 10/25/2007 | Debbie Schlussel

Posted on 10/26/2007 4:11:31 AM PDT by WWTD

When I first wrote about First Lady Laura Bush's latest Breast Cancer Awareness Tour of the Extremist Islamic World (redundant), I noted that Mrs. Bush's PR team told the press that she would not, under any circumstances, don an Islamic headscarf or anything of the sort:

"They do not expect nor encourage it," of Western visitors at official meetings, said Bush's spokeswoman, Sally McDonough. "As members of the official traveling party, we will not need to wear any head scarves or abayas at any point."

I didn't buy it. And, as usual, my instincts were correct. This is Sheikha Laura, yesterday, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (thanks to reader "greatcometof1577").

She is being attacked here for PUTTING ON A GIFT.

So, if they gave her a bright red bra, some matching panties and nice garters she'd have immediately put those "gifts" on?

(It's OK to insert a Judy Ruliani joke here. I did mention bra and panties...)

A head scarf is not a swastika.

I should argue that a swastika is just a symbol, and only has the power you give it. But who cares, I wouldn’t wear one to prove the point.

If they were giving her a suicide vest, I’d agree with you.

So you are saying that we should allow the Muslims to dictate to our First Lady what she can and cannot wear?

I think not. We only give them power if we do that.

“Surely when a woman is in America she realizes this and realizes that she is antagonizing us. But then again, maybe I’m the only one that feels this way.”

I work on a campus where I occasionally see a Muslim student wearing a head scarf and it doesn’t bother me. I can’t say as I’ve ever seen the outfit where all you see is their eyes, though.

Is it possible to reject the extreme elements of a religion while showing tolerance toward those aspects that are consistent with one's own.

As a Protestant, I strongly object to the doctrines of the Roman church. I could say that the President's visit reinforce or gives credence to doctrines I reject.

However, I take no offense at a President visiting the Vatican or his wife wearing the traditional black veil. I have no reason to suggest that the visit reveals a hidden sympathy for Romanism.

I just think there are far more important subjects to get own's drawers in a knot over.

"Who are you quoting and why are you posting such a disgusting comment?" Lighten up Francis!

Guess you didn’t see that cinema scene either. (Stripes - Bill Murray)

“Jane you ignorant slut” came from an SNL satirical comedy skit with Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtain.

So, could you please lighten up Syncro?

“...if you read the article with the real quote from Mrs. Bush’s PR rep, it doesn’t say that she WON’T wear a headscarf or abaya, it says she won’t NEED to.”

Clintonian parsing if I’ve ever seen it.”

Not hardly. They mean two totally different things.

So do the words “is” and “is”, depending on the context in which they are used. Clintonian indeed.

Ok, the next Muslim you see, shoot them? (sarcasm) The next Mosque you pass, blow it up? (sarcasm) Never mind the details. Any and every and all Muslims and anything whatsoever to do with their religion, right? Even if they aren’t bothering you or anyone else and aren’t causing trouble or planning to. Just because they are Muslim and for no other reason...

Post 124 shows her pictured in an official meeting with Saudi royalty, the male leadership of Saudi Arabia in other words. They are wearing their traditional garb and Laura is wearing hers. UNCOVERED. NOT A SCARF IN SIGHT. Come again, won’t you, and tell us how she submitted to Sharia Law? How stupid can people be. I’m ashamed to be here. The stupidity is more than I can bear.

Thank you for your detailed and mildly (?) condescending explanation

"Who are you quoting and why are you posting such a disgusting comment?" Lighten up Francis!

Guess you didn’t see that cinema scene either. (Stripes - Bill Murray)

Oh I may have, I don't remember. But it has been posted here numerous times as an inane way of saying "How dare you question me, do I have to ping the Admin Moderator?"

“Jane you etc etc” came from an SNL satirical comedy skit with Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtain.

And that is the best way you found to criticize Debbie Schlussel? Ahhh, well OK...if it was in an SNL skit, it just begs to be used as a comment on FR!

So, could you please lighten up Syncro?

Me? LOL

You ask me twice, and ping the Admin Moderator and I need to lighten up?

My point was, do we really need to use gross invectives to get points across here at FR? It seems you choose to.

If this post bothers you as my last one seems to have, please don't bother the Admin Moderator with a ping. They are busy with more serious matters than validating your posts.

Just so I can for the first time post the Stripes thingie see below:

Lighten up FrancisPoobear!

This is how she dressed to meet the king of the Wahabis on his own crazed and backward turf, and she dressed this way throughout her ME visit. I say Laura is demonstrating the exact opposite of submission.

This is a misnomer - it is actually a war against Muslim extremism.

Yes, the operative word "extremist".

If the US treats EVERY single Muslim dress custom as a terrorist, then we WILL have an endless war.

Are we to demand that all foreigner women never wear a headscarf -- or we will consider them as supporting terrorists?

As hard as it is to fathom, there are SOME saudi's who are on the side of western civilization.

Does that mean we trust them with the family jewels? Of course not.

But putting on a headscarf in the private residence presence of a pro-West pro-Bush administration family is NOT submitting to terrorism, as some here on FR suggest.

For heaven's sake, please stop being as wack-a-doodle as the blind leftists.

Unfortunately, Bush has gone beyond the pale by stating that the muslims believe in the same god as the Jews and the Christians, whose God is not the same, and then to continue repeating the mantra of “Islam is a religion of peace,” when it that could not be further from the truth.

Bush and his family’s actions deserve scrutiny, as it is he who claims to have God whispering in his ear.

Regarding the Admin Moderator? Disgusting can get you banned from this forum.

Too bad whining can’t. Now that IS condescending.

I still wish you well.

“Women wear head scarves throughout the world, and placing a scarf on one’s head does not necessarily imply that the wearer has embraced Islam. I believe that since it was a gift, that our First Lady perceived the gesture to be a cultural one, and not a religious one. She was obviously brought up to respond in that manner.”

Your comment makes a lot of sense.
She wore a lace mantilla to meet the pope. She is not a woman who normslly wears hats, but she wore a hat to go to the Queen Mother’s funeral. In each case she was conforming to the local protocol.
The item in question here was decorated with the pink ribbons of the breast cancer awareness movement, so it is not even the standard Saudi covering, which by tradition is all black; it was presented to her the way a pink tee-shirt might be presented at a breast cancer awareness event in the US. It seems clear to me that the women intended it thar way.
I doubt the women had ulterior motives. Look at that woman’s face, and the little girl’s. Clearly they are loving that Mrs. Bush is being there; they look happy and proud. Accepting the scarf and putting it on briefly (most of the time on this trip she has been bare-headed) was a gracious gesture. No more.
And no more a “submission to Islam” than wearing that black lace mantilla to meet the pope indicated she had converted to Catholicism.
I went to a service at a synagogue recently, and was presented with a yarmulke ; I put it on, as I observed a number of men whom I know are not Jewish were also doing. Did nor regard it as signifying “submission to Judaism.” -:)

State the scripture wherein Paul ever said we are to “respect the gods of our host” or give deference thereto.

The Old Testament, 1st commandment states: “There shall be no gods before me.” These would include false gods and goddesses and the anti-Christ. Christ also said, “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets” (Matthew 5:17).

2 Timothy

4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

4:5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

Christ never said to respect any false gods, at their homes or otherwise. Respecting others is not respecting false gods.

So you are upset because Bush’s religion is not the same as yours. And you think as President he should only speak about YOUR religion, not his religion.

As to which “God” they worship, there is only one true God, and one true way to have fellowship with Him.

Anybody who worships outside of that paradigm could be said to not be worshipping “the same God”.

Or could be said to be worshipping the only God their is, only incorrectly.

I tend toward the former. We build our own gods to worship because we don’t like the One that exists.

But from an historical point of view, Muslims have the same “God”, they just think Jews and Christians have a very incorrect view of that God, one they think they corrected.

So I guess it depends if you are looking at this from a theological perspective, an historical perspective, or just from the truth.

I don’t particularly expect my President in his official capacity to deal with the theological perspective, and while I hope he is a true believer, I don’t expect him to be correct about all matters of faith.

I know peaceful muslims. That doesn’t make their religion peaceful, or not, it just makes THEM peaceful. I know hate-filled “Christians”. That doesn’t make the religion hate-fulled, just makes THEM hate-filled.

As a true believer, I suspect that true believers won’t be hate-filled nearly as much as followers of false religions. But that’s just my biased opinion. Unfortunately, I have to deal with the consequences of those who say they are my brethren who don’t act like it.
