The Bloomberg administration, in its continuing fight against obesity, reintroduced a measure yesterday to force chain restaurants to display calorie information on their menus or menu boards, after a federal judge struck down a similar measure last month.
Many chains, including McDonalds, Burger King and Starbucks, already provide calorie information on their Web sites or on posters or tray liners.
But health officials say customers rarely see this information before deciding what to order. The regulation would require the calorie counts to be posted as prominently as the price of each menu item. For many fast food outlets, that means the information would be added to the big signs behind the cash registers that list food items and prices.
The big picture is that New Yorkers dont have access to calorie information, said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the citys health commissioner. They overwhelmingly want it. Not everyone will use it, but many people will, and when they use it, it changes what they order, and that should reduce obesity and, with it, diabetes.

If the city can't coerce the sheeple to drop the Chalupa, excercise and quit smoking they will be broke within 2 decades.
NYC is becoming quite a police state.
Go ahead. Turn the finest restaurants in the world into hospital food.

I used to love NY. It’s really a crying shame.
As if people going into McDonalds weren’t already aware that the food they were eating was outragiously unhealthy.
The mayor thinks he is Caesar.
Thank you, mommy Bloomberg. What’s next, an ordinance requiring everyone use an umbrella when it rains so they won’t get wet and catch cold?
They already have banned foie gras, which is threatening to put on of only a handful of domestic producers out of business. From my cold greasy hands.....
Don’t give him or his chief SS officer Frieden any ideas.
It is my right to eat any eatable animal liver of my choice.
I think this is a GREAT idea. In fact, I’ve been advocating a plan for some time that I think will ensure we all eat right. Every time a citizen eats, a government bureaucrat will come to their house and spoon feed them the proper amounts of the right foods. Oh, what a wonderful world it will be!
Right after he tackles this “ponderous” social issue, Mayor Bloomburg expects to announce his new “Politeness Policy”.
All New Yorkers will be required to greet each other in the morning with a smile and “Good Day” (or Buenos Dias). First time offenders will be sentenced to public service for one week. For the second offense, they will be severely tickled to make them smile.
Exactly right. The problem with electing billionaires is that they are used to having their way and can’t handle it when someone tells them “no”
NYC has more important problems that require his attention, but fast food is an easy target.
The whole idea is quite hilarious - how many of these customers will actually be able to read the info? And you have to be kidding yourself if you think the average joe or judy doesn’t know that hamburgers are fatty.
Good Grief! If the customers are really interested in the caloric content they will read the pamphlets that most of these places hand out!
Doesn’t NYC have bigger problems to address!
—I respectfully disagree. If they were smart, NYC would encourage overweight and smoking so they’d die younger—before they need Medicade—
Single owner pizza parlors and sub sandwich shops can get you fat too.
This is an attack on corporate entities only.
We laugh about it now. Just wait. When the Gubmints efforts to nag people to eat right and excercise don’t work, there will be more draconian measures to come.
That was a way to get past the court ruling that the city lost.
