Have to share what happened in the voluntary meeting that our company invited us to attend this morning.

Our firm is sponsoring a “Support the Troops” Campaign, and to kick it off, an active-duty soldier stationed at Ft. Bragg came to speak to us employees about his experiences in the military and to explain why he serves.

His talk was doubly interesting, because he is a Mexican immigrant who came to this country when he was 10 and decided to join up after 9/11. He spoke about his desire to do something for the country who had given so much to him, and that he swells with pride whenever he hears the National Anthem.

He talked for about 45 minutes regarding his experiences in Iraq, where he had been deployed twice. He said, as I’ve heard so many in the military also say, that it’s nothing like the media portrays it. When someone asked how his unit was greeted by the Iraqi people when they first arrived, he said there was so much cheering and applause he felt like “a celebrity.”

We’ll be starting a drive to collect items for care packages for the troops. I’m a little surprised but very pleased that our company is doing this.

I’m proud of your company for doing that. Sure wish more companies and organizations would pick up on doing this kind of thing.
