FRED: WHAT WOULD REAGAN THINK?
MSNBC ^ | October 24, 2007 | Adam Aigner-Treworgy

MT. PLEASANT, SC -- This morning Thompson invoked the name of Ronald Reagan at a retail stop here at Alex’s Diner, saying that many of his opponents are late comers to Reagan’s party and the former president must be sitting up in his grave, “looking down and shaking his head saying who are these fellows that are using my name so often in these debates.”

A day after rolling out a new proposal for how to handle illegal immigration, the former senator continued to criticize “sanctuary cities” and emphasize his plan to strip cities of federal funding if they refuse to comply with federal immigration laws.

Thompson also sharpened his criticisms of his fellow GOP candidates and his Democratic rivals. First, he pleaded with the mostly friendly audience at the diner to help him convince voters to vote Republican.

“Don’t turn the keys to this country over to a political party who wants to do nothing more than create a gigantic welfare state from the United States of America,” Thompson said. “Don’t turn this … country over to a party who insults our generals and plays politics with national security. Don’t do that.”

Then Thompson referred to a question asked at Sunday’s debate about his “bold” entitlement proposals.(continued)

I think if Reagan was still alive, he’d be supporting Hunter, and Rudy wouldn’t even be running.

Thompson said. “If the American people say, ‘Well we don’t want to hear that,’ well all they can do is send me back to being the happiest man you ever met. I don’t have a political career to lose, because I never really had one to start with.”

Yup, he's gonna go balls out with nothing to lose and he's gonna shake it up real good. This is getting more and more fun all the time..:)

Nah, Reagan was a part man. He supported Bush over conservative choices in 1988.

Giuliani invoked the name of Ronald Reagan yesterday, so that makes him more Reagany than Freddie, doesn’t it?

Why do you lump in Rush as a Pro-Rudy guy?

As far as I know he has not mentioned anything about supporting Rudy.

>>>>>Nah, Reagan was a part man. He supported Bush over conservative choices in 1988.

Reagan was loyal to his VP, because George was loyal to Reagan for two terms. Reagan expected Bush41 to carry on his conservative agenda too. That didn't happen.

I agree. I’m leaning towards Duncan Hunter because he’s the most conservative candidate the Republicans have running.

In the primaries, it makes sense to vote for the guy that has policies and positions closest to Ronald Reagan.

That’s Duncan Hunter!

True he was loyal. My point was that he didn’t just pick the best sounding conservative voice out of the field.

He was loyal to the Northeastern sissy who teamed up with him 8 years earlier.

You’re offering conflicting remarks.

In 1988 Reagan made the right move. That doesn’t mean he’d be backing Rooty today, or a 3% candidate with no chance of winning.
