Senate Votes to Stop Spitzer Plan to Give Illegal Immigrants Driver’s Licenses (NY Senate)
NY Times ^ | October 23, 2007 | NICHOLAS CONFESSORE

ALBANY, Oct. 22 — Spurred by overwhelming public opposition to Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s decision to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses, the State Senate yesterday passed legislation that would overturn the policy.

The 39-19 vote, which passed with the support of all the Republican senators present as well as several key Democrats, capped a debate laden with accusations of racism and demagoguery and warnings about terrorism and voter fraud. The vote also followed a raucous protest outside the Capitol, during which some opponents of the plan called for the governor to be recalled or impeached.

The clashes over the driver’s license policy overshadowed nearly all other business on Monday, and further dimmed the prospect for passage of major legislation that the governor and the Legislature have been negotiating for months, such as campaign finance reform and a property tax rebate for elderly homeowners.

The Senate bill is among a range of legislative and legal maneuvers Republicans are mustering to overturn Mr. Spitzer’s plan, which was issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles in September. Assembly Republicans said they would try to attach a similar measure to unrelated legislation likely to reach the floor of their chamber during Tuesday’s Assembly session.

Their chances of ultimately prevailing on the measure may be slight, given that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, supports Mr. Spitzer’s policy and has nearly untrammeled control over the flow of legislation in his chamber.

But Republicans are eager for even a procedural vote to put Democrats on the record on the issue. Some Democrats have expressed uneasiness with...

--snip--

“Silver has not been a go-between,” Mr. Bruno said when asked about Mr. Silver’s comments. “If he has, he’s a dismal failure. All he is doing is feathering his own nest, making excuses for his own inactivity.”

IMHO, the Times buried this story. I saw it there first. I searched under Spitzer to find it again.

Impeach or recall.

We did it to Gov. Davis in CA, and now it’s Spitzer’s turn.

Then we can focus on Schwarzenegger...

Spurred by overwhelming public opposition

What is wrong with these politicians who keep pushing for amnesty and benefits for illegals?

The Dream Act is being voted on tomorrow in Washington.

Are these politicians so clueless or do they just not give a damn what a vast majority of the people want?

IMHO.... ...this is all a scam.

The Democrats will continue to do this.

Push what they want for the illegals, and then abruptly cease and desist because of the rabid opposition from 'the far Right'.

We're being played...and some of you are useful idiots.

After the election, you'll see how much they give a damn about opposition from the peasants.

They may have been trying to help him “save face”. I can’t see many trusting enough to give information that could get then deported at a later date.

Canadian, Australian, English, German, Swiss, Irish, Mexican.

Apparently only one of the above represents a "race" of people.

Here are eight of the nineteen that voted for illegals to have licenses and against the Senates plan to stop it. The eight names I have are Craig Johnson, Klein, Savino, Valesky, Carl Kruger, Stachowski, Stewart-Cousins and Thompson…. If you have the rest of their names please send them to me and I will make the picture complete. HT’s to Elizabeth Benjamin for these names.

...a debate laden with accusations of racism and demagoguery...

Alright, which one of Huckabee, Chertoff, or Martinez addressed the NY Senate? :-)

Liberals - can't win elections with felons and the undead, now trying to expand the motor voter base of illegals. Next stop: provisional ballots sent to Somalia, Venezuela and China. I guess America isn't yet self-destructing at an acceptable pace.

I wonder if he’s been getting advice from Shillery....the carpetbagger Senator of NY who does anything and everything BUT represent anyone in NY except special interests and herself, of course.

I believe it's the latter, or they think we're that dumb.

Supposedly, according to the NY Times' story I read some years back, he got 1600 on the SAT way back when. That's a perfect score. He thinks we're that dumb, IMHO. That's why they brag about bringing home assorted pork from D.C., whether it is something absurd and bizarre or infrastructure maintenance.

The he in that comment is Schumer.

I was born and raised in New York, and at one time, I was proud of it, but no more... I left NY in 1976,to move to TEXAS, and never looked back, so I can’t vote ( I hate to see what is happening to that state, but they deserve it)..

They know what we want Tom.....they just don't care.

We're trying to upset their plan to have multitudes of illegals registered and voting in the next election.

Simple as that.
