Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly is expressing strong dissatisfaction with the top-tier Republican presidential candidates. She also questions the validity of the results of the Values Voters straw poll on Saturday.
Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly says most of the GOP candidates who have been designated frontrunners are globalists. According to Schlafly, candidates Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, John McCain, and Mike Huckabee all "need to wake up" and realize they need the votes of Reagan Democrats to win.
"I think that's a great mistake for the Republicans. I feel that it's very important that they reach out to people on the jobs issue," Schlafly shares. "I was quite disappointed with the debate that was broadcast from Michigan, which is an economically depressed state, and they didn't appear to have any sympathy or compassion for all the millions of people who've lost their jobs that have moved to China."
In the straw poll taken over the weekend in conjunction with the Values Voters Summit, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney topped former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee by a mere 30 votes. Schlafly contends that Huckabee was the winner among conference attendees who heard the weekend's speeches.
"The straw poll was interesting," she offers. "People were able to vote on it even though they weren't here. They could vote for the prior two weeks before the conference took place and before they heard any of the speakers." And in her opinion, that means one cannot say a whole lot about the validity of the poll.
Schlafly believes all that can be deduced from the poll is that so-called "values voters" are still shopping for their candidate. And she says while social conservatives are divided in many ways, they all agree they cannot support a candidate who is not pro-life. The Eagle Forum founder tells OneNewsNow the only GOP hopefuls she is comfortable with are Congressmen Duncan Hunter of California and Tom Tancredo of Colorado.
She’s been putting feminists, hippies and other leftist in their place since the 60’s. She has been battling the left longer than just about anyone. She is actively working against the LOST treaty, the North American Superhighway, spearheaded the defeat of the Dubai ports deal.
Yeah, I would she doesn’t have an idea of what she’s talking about. /s Come on get a clue.
I was one of those Reagan democrats. I have also been a Teamster Union member for nearly 30yrs. Believe me when I say that Duncan Hunter up against any Democrat will win in a landslide. The others may squeak by just like Bush did because they represent the same old, same old. They do not motivate the casual voter. Hunter would clean the dems clocks just like Ronald Reagan did.
Nuts about our country and where it's heading.
If they try to foster a faux conservative on us (by us I always mean my family) and the dims take the WH the senate and the house, I'll bet the remaining republicans get their balls out of their wives purses and start acting like real conservatives and tie the dims up constantly. It'll paralyze our government. Look at how useless the dims are now. All they do is threaten they don't have the muscle or the votes to get anything accomplished.
Yup.
Agreed, of course. Hunter is on the mark all the way around- But the resounding issue that brought ALL of America to her feet was, and still is immigration. No one else (and I do mean nobody, including Tanc) has the credentials on Border and immigration that Hunter has.
If Repubs are interested in winning this election, this is the best single issue to win votes across the board and across the isle.
Well, I don’t care for Shafly too much. And I defy anyone in this country to label me a “DU plant”! I am more American than most of the people on FR, my family having been in this country for almost 400 years, and having fought for this country in every war we have ever been in! We’ve paid our dues, and my only wish for this country is to get back to the basics of the Constitution and the original Christian ideals of this country. And the founding fathers weren’t isolationists!
That's the pure truth of it.
Just a bit of my weird sense of humor. Don’t take it personal. and btw, no one was talking isolationism.
Happy Anniversary!
i’m for fred.
OK, but surely you realize that fans of other candidates have no desire to crown Fred as ‘the guy’ to beat hillary, including Mrs. Schlafly.
I think you might have trouble defending your statement about the founding fathers and isolationism. First, one of the primary reasons that the Articles of Confederation were abandoned was that the Britain was flooding America with cheep manufactured goods and putting many northern manufacturers out of Business. One of the important new powers that they gave to the Federal Government was the power to enact tarrifs - which they in fact did on British Goods. Second, in his farewell adress Washington warned about entangling foreign alliances. So, in conclusion, I think there are good arguments that the times have changed since the founder but I don’t think you can make a good faith argument that the founders were not “isolationist” as it is defined by the Free Traders in todays Republican party.
Duncan Hunter is far from an isolationist. In foreign policy, he will step on Iran’s and China’s throats harder than anyone else. In domestic policy, he intends to level the playing field for our manufacturing industries. That is hardley an isolationist. It’s called putting America first.
The thing about Reagan Democrats is, they’re more like Republicans than Democrats. Or that is to say, they’re more like Republicans can be, than they are like Democrats are now.
The Democrat party used to be patriotic. I mean, JFK screwed the pooch in the Bay of Pigs fiasco, but basically he was a seriously anti-Communist hard-— at heart, I think.
He was really the last Democrat like that. Now they’re seriously flirting with socialism, and their far-left social agenda is about the furthest thing from what your average Mid-American autoworker believes in.
They must feel like they’re surrounded by freaks. Really.
But they’re not welcome in the GOP.
THEY WERE.
They were Reagan Democrats.
They were the landslide.
They can and will, be victory.
Let’s bring them onboard. Really.
FReepers will like them. :)
From the very beginning of this country, and even before it was a country, we traded with other countries. We always have. Maybe my definition of isolationism is different than yours. We cannot isolate ourselves from the rest of world, hoping that the two oceans will protect us from harm.
I am certain she supports DH--but it's time to make that plain as well...
putting America first.
***Maybe the MSM & NRC think of him as Buchanan redux. It’s difficult to figure out why he’s not gaining traction.
No one, including Hunter, has any intention of not trading with other countries. He does, however, want to kill the WTO. We made an agreement with the world that other countries with other types of taxation, are able to rebate all taxes to their exporting manufacturers. When President Bush tried to do the same, the WTO rejected our tax breaks as unfair subsidies and we had to rescind them, or face billions in fines. This sovereignty usurping BS must end.
I may have to drop her a line. ;o)
I know its just that the “Walter Williams” wing of the party has redefined the term isolationist to mean anyone who is not 100% behind free trade regardless of its possible effect on American Jobs, Sovereignty or National Security.
I agree that we can’t hide behind the oceans - I am much less isolationist than the founders were in that regard. I also agree that we should trade with other countries. However, when we sign trade agreements we need to consider what is in our best interest - it does not make sense to sign agreements like NAFTA and free trade with China which will simply encourage our businesses to relocate their manufacturing and other facilities to China or Mexico.
