"We couldn't let such a nice prison burn down," Ronny Stenberg said after he and fellow inmates at Arendal Prison in Fyresdal chose to fight flames rather than run. "I don't dare think what would have happened if the prisoners themselves hadn't discovered the fire and helped fight it," prison guard Daniel Trollsås told newspaper Agderposten.
When firefighters arrived after about 40 minutes, a prisoner sleeping near the blaze had been pulled out to safety and the fire halted, with damage limited to only one barracks.
In appreciation of the effort, the prison threw a party last Wednesday after the blaze, with Trollsås buying cake and candy for everyone.
"I've done time in a closed prison, I wouldn't wish that on anyone," said Stenberg about the inmates' decision to preserve their prison.
Fyresdal grants prisoners a high degree of personal responsibility, and this program gave the approximately 30 inmates little hesitation in staying to fight for their facility rather than going on the run when the fire broke out.
About 10-12 years ago prisoners took responsibility and saved my life when one of the inmates went completely berserk and tried to kill me. Now I have had another chance to experience that this prison is full of so many good and reasonable people that when things get dangerous, it is the prisoners that take charge," Trollsås told Agderposten.

Norwegian prison is like the Mayberry jail.
Easy oil riches make Norwegians look like geniuses. But is has made their minds soft - That’s why they invite Muslims to live there and don’t like Israel. What god do they have up there? My guess it’s a socialist kind of god but one that allows lots of boats for citizens

all they did was fight a fire.....they are in prison but fought a fire..........some by decent reaction and others so as not to have to be on the run as quoted...nothing more.

Oil is, evidently, not enough to make a country rich. Look at Libya which has about the same population as Norway and even larger oil (and gas) reserves. The Norwegian (nominal) GDP/Capita is nine times that of Libya!
Many people, even in my home country Sweden (which is a neighbor country of Norway), seem unaware of the fact that a lot of the Norwegian wealth comes from business activities that demand a certain degree of intelligence like shipping, shipbuilding, mining, investments on various global markets (stock, real estate etc), fishing, forest industry and other industustrial activities.
Furthermore, Norway is a very well administered country with a population that believes in hard work and law and order, in similarity to the other Scandinavian countries (Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland).
To a large extent, Scandinavia is the richest part of the Earth due to intelligence and CULTURAL traits.
It’s just like the prosperity of the US, which comes from Capitalism, work ethics and belief in freedom in combination with justice, well working societal institutions and respect for law and order.
I agree Scandinavia is more Socialist than the US, but our kind of Socialism isn’t one that hurts our successful companies. Quite contrary, Scandinavia is today one of the fastest growing economies on earth and the business environment is great. Among other things, the corporate taxes are really low (way lower than in the US).
I also agree some of the Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) have received too many Muslim immigrants. Many of them are very Westernized, but there are also a lot of Muslims who don’t wish to integrate. These people should be sent back.
Lets just call it the James D. Watson effect
