During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. -- United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171
Turns out that not wearing a flag lapel pin isn't the only way Barack Obama chooses to show he's a different kind of Democrat.
Have a look at the photo from the October 1, 2007 edition of "Time." It shows Obama, Hillary and Bill Richardson at the Steak Fry of Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) on September 17 in Indianola, IA during [according to the photo caption] the National Anthem. Richardson and Clinton have their hands on their heart. But not Obama. Does he perhaps believe that, like wearing the flag pin, the hand on the heart isn't "true patriotism"?
"Time" ran the photo without comment. I haven't seen coverage of this anywhere else in the MSM. Perhaps some enterprising reporter can ask the Illinois senator about his decision to spurn this American tradition.

There does appear to be /something/ going on to the right of the candidates. Richardson isn’t distracted, tho. And he appears to be “vocalizing” something.
The “unnamed” woman (Richardson’s wife, maybe?) really wants to see whatever that is.
obama is just showing his contempt for the USA but he would support the plo flag I bet
Is it just me, or do all of these photos of the Democrats with “their hands over their hearts” seem off? Look at where their hands are at. Is that where they were taught as children their hearts were? Richardson looks like he’s patting his jacket to find a pair of reading glasses.
Yes, that's it. Thank you.
Body language experts (one of which I am not!) interpret this position as showing low self-esteem, weakness and passive/agressive protection (defensiveness).
He didn’t have to when he went to school in Indonesia... so why would he feel obligated now?
OsamaObamajomama is going to get so blown away in the
Dimwit’s nomination process.
He can go run for Prez in Singapore!
When does the fun actually start?

But, then again, he may be placing his hand over what he perceives to be the body-part most worth protecting
Or, where his patriotism is derived from?
Or, a subtle gesture of his contempt for the USA (crotch-grab).
“HOWEVER ... their demeanor is sloppy even by minor-league baseball game standards. One would think that Presidential Candidates would try to do better than that.”
We went to a college football game Saturday. I was teaching my 3 yr old how to behave during the anthem, and to place his hand over his heart. I looked around at the crowd. I would have to say less than 1/4 had their hands over their hearts-most people had their head down with their hands behind them. A good portion were not even paying attention, looking around or even talking. By the way, we were not sitting in a student section, most of these people were alumni and parents. It was strange.
That's disgraceful.
was teaching my 3 yr old how to behave
Thank you for bringing your kid up right.
Code Pinko doing something unmentionable?
Hussein is a closet muslim and another enemy within (our gubmit).
Maybe they are looking at the singer?
He looks dopey.
Should be obvious. It is to continue the erosion of the Constitution in order to remake it in the flawed vision he holds.
To destroy it.
Or he genuinely forgot. Or the anthem just ended and he was the first to put his hand down. But I don't think I'm going to give him a pass.
He'll probably respond with 'I was mis-treated when I was a kid.' Or, 'What about the photographer? Why should he be immune from criticism?' Or, 'I had a terrible itch I had to attend to.'
Hussein showing his true colors
In fairness to fairness, neither has Obama-mama.
