Equipping 11-Year-Olds for Sex at King Middle School
North Star Writers Group ^ | October 22, 2007 | Dan Calabrese

Posted on 10/22/2007 6:58:52 AM PDT by Invisigoth

Not all parents at Portland, Maine’s King Middle School are outraged that school officials are setting up health clinics that will provide contraceptives to children as young as 11.

Carol Schiller is reportedly elated. She has had a son and a daughter graduate from King, and says those who find it shocking that 11-year-olds have sex should “get over it.”

OK. I’m over it. I know 11-year-olds have sex. My wife and I run a drug/alcohol-prevention group for teens, and the teens are very honest with us about what they do. We are well past the point of finding just about anything shocking.

What is shocking, however, is how poorly the officials at King Middle School are applying their own knowledge of the nature of 11-year-olds to this issue. An 11-year-old cannot get a work permit, cannot get a driver’s license and cannot get a prescription for cold medicine filled without a parent’s permission. In most cases, the 11-year-old cannot even go home after school if his or her parents are working, because he or she is too young to be alone for two hours, which is why latchkey programs were established.

Good point you made & I wonder just how successful they are at what they do there. Anyone know how they operate & what they are telling theses children? If they are ok with sex that young what are earth are they telling kids about drugs?

Is carol a single mother, how old is she? I will never get over any child having sex. Sex is not an after school activity, is should be reserved for marriage alone and we should shout this from the soapbox instead of equipping our children to abuse themselves emotionally and physically.

Nice article.

Liberal Logic never ceases to amaze me. While the thought of their kid just standing *near* a gun sends lib parents into vapors, they have no problem at all with providing something even more dangerous - birth control, and implied permission to use it.

Whoa whoa whoa . . . author here.

I did not say we are OK with it, and I certainly did not say we tell the kids it’s OK.

All I said is that it doesn’t shock us. Hardly anything does anymore.

I object to it because it’s wrong, not because it’s shocking.

Ditto.

I would not want my children to go to that school.

I wonder what kind of adult feels a need to discuss sex with other people’s minor children

I wonder what kind of a school thinks that it's not OK to sing Christmas carols, but it *is* ok to talk about sex. Further, I wonder what makes a school think that teachers who can't teach kids to read and write still are qualified to teach SexEd.

I don’t think that 11 and 12 year old’s having sex is the issue here, it’s the schools (and government) enabling a practice that is widely perscived to be negative illegal.

Better.

and says those who find it shocking that 11-year-olds have sex should “get over it.”

What a coincidence! There's an entire, nation-wide organization made up of people who feel EXACTLY THE SAME WAY!

What I find shocking is that parents would send their children to a school that think that this is acceptable. Even more shocked that any parent would think that the proper reaction to this fact is to just "get over it", as if there is nothing that can be done about it. What a limp-wristed, defeatist, immoral response.

I personally don't mind sex education at school once the child has reached an appropriate maturity level and the parents agree to the curriculum. Children need to know about the consequences of sex, including pregnancy, STDs, AIDS and the like. They also need to understand that abstinence is the only way to prevent such problems. Such education should never in any way, shape or form condone or encourage sexual activity, but children at some point do need to understand these things.

With that in mind, one cannot come to any other conclusion than that this program is completely irresponsible because birth control on its own does not prevent any of the other problems related to sex. I agree with your point about "what kind of adult..." but I am going to add my own conclusion. These adults are incompetent at best and perverts at worst for encouraging any sexual activity in children.

I think perverts.

Maine was one of the few states that refused to release data on child predators found in their school systems.

This on a recent AP study of child abuse in public schools.

Soebody needs to find and investigate the backgrounds of all the people on the school board or administrations who started this.

And I would like to know who Carole Schiller is and what she does for a living and if she has a criminal history.

She's probably thrilled because now she doesn't have to buy the kids their birth control herself and pay out of her own pocket.

And lest anyone think I'm being facetious, I do know a mother who did that for her 12 year old daughter.

She ended up pregnant at 13 anyway.

What’s next? Clean needles and syringes? After all, we can’t stop 11-year-olds from doing heroin. Responsible parents realize that and promote safety.

LOL, no, that pretty much explains it. I'm sure they will fight for the right for abortions with no parental notification too.

I mean, cmon, it's embarrassing for an 11-year-old to have to ask for permission for an abortion, and they might have right-wing neanderthal parents.

Dan Calabrese, I want to thank you for writing this article. It's smart, it's informed, and (from my perspective anyway) it's convincing.

My husband and I are driving to a city 100 miles away this Saturday to take our two teenage boys to see the movie Bella. Trailer here. We want to make sure that they get not just the facts, but the heart-response that puts sex, love, marriage and family in context.

God made the human heart for more than trivial pursuit. A heart full of love and honor will not even be attracted to junk sex.

“’I know 11-year-olds have sex.’

“Not if you’ve taught them properly.”

It sounds like the parents, the school, and some on these threads have just given up and acquiesced to 11 year olds having sex.

Parents don’t monitor friendships and acquaintances of their children? Parents don’t know where their 11 year olds are? Parents don’t teach their children?

It is just a given in modern America that 11 year olds are running wild and unmonitored. And it’s now considered normal. It may be common, but it is ABnormal.

We have an 11 year old among our seven children. We know her whereabouts ALWAYS, and with so many brothers and sisters, she has no secrets. That’s one of the benefits of having a large family.

Well, I am being unfair, I guess. My wife doesn’t work outside the home, and . . . we home school.
