Equipping 11-Year-Olds for Sex at King Middle School
North Star Writers Group ^ | October 22, 2007 | Dan Calabrese

Not all parents at Portland, Maine’s King Middle School are outraged that school officials are setting up health clinics that will provide contraceptives to children as young as 11.

Carol Schiller is reportedly elated. She has had a son and a daughter graduate from King, and says those who find it shocking that 11-year-olds have sex should “get over it.”

OK. I’m over it. I know 11-year-olds have sex. My wife and I run a drug/alcohol-prevention group for teens, and the teens are very honest with us about what they do. We are well past the point of finding just about anything shocking.

What is shocking, however, is how poorly the officials at King Middle School are applying their own knowledge of the nature of 11-year-olds to this issue. An 11-year-old cannot get a work permit, cannot get a driver’s license and cannot get a prescription for cold medicine filled without a parent’s permission. In most cases, the 11-year-old cannot even go home after school if his or her parents are working, because he or she is too young to be alone for two hours, which is why latchkey programs were established.

I don’t think that 11 and 12 year old’s having sex is the issue here, it’s the schools (and government) enabling a practice that is widely perscived to be negative.

“I know 11-year-olds have sex. “

Not if you’ve taught them properly.

I always found it disgustingly funny how the school justifies giving birth control to children. I know that when I was that age, my parents would have beaten me silly if I even thought of pulling the “well they are doing it anyway” argument, at least at age 11.

Any child that young that is having sex needs serious help. Any parent that allows their child at that age to have sex needs to be committed.

I have 5 kids the 2 older ones 21 & 19 did not have sex in high school ( I cannot speak for the two older ones since they live on their own ) and the 3 younger ones ( 16,10,8 ) will follow that path. Strong presence in church, reading the Bible, doing things with your kids ( even when the older ones protest ), and being just outright nosey into their business is the key to success.

Keep them off the internet, very strict cell phone plan and rules ( do not get one until 16 and no texting ever ), monitor tv and friends, and let them know you are not above showing up out of the blue at places they are suppose to be just to check up by actually doing it.

I agree. The author is just commenting on what he runs into when he talks to these kids. He’s not condoning it by any means.

Oh I know it. I’m sure those 11 year old come from broken households, with no father figure, etc. Getting them free contraception just further enables the activity.

My wife and I run a drug/alcohol-prevention group for teens,

What for?

Kids are going to do drugs anyway.

She should just get over it.

Eleven-year-olds also commit murder. Shall we get over it?

He probably allows his 12-year old daughter to smoke at the table in front of her kids!

Everyone knows that kids this age are a little shy about their bodies so we need to pass out alcohol as well in order to loosen these kids up a bit. If that doesnt work, give them some pot to smoke or a Quaalude or two to really get the party rolling along.

Wrong. The whole thing is wrong. Parents who think children should be engaging in sexual behavior are not parents. Educators usurping the role of parents to “protect” what? This whole thing is sick and it is wrong—it shows where America is headed if something does not draw a line and says no further.

Carol Shiller may be ok with 11 yr olds having sex but I am not. I don't know what kind of parents are out there but if I find my 11 yr old daughter( who is 8 now thankfully) is having sex that young we are going to be having some big issues.

I think if the school is going to hand out birth control that parents must be notified asap to deal with the issue. I hope the school is also having a class on what sex that young does to a girl's self esteem & how AIDS DOES KILL & the dangers of std's & pregnancy which can happen even with birth control. I am just disgusted & think Carol Shiller is a moron.

I tend to agree with you, but the kids havign sex is the smokescreen that hides the real issue.

because SOME 11/12 year olds may have had sex, they want to program EVERY 11 and 12 year old to be ready for sex. AND they want to be the ones to teach them.

again, I wonder what kind of adult feels a need to discuss sex with other people’s minor children...
