LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Oh Goodness! If he is in Rancho Bernardo, he is supposed to be gone! How old is he?

"La Jolla is pretty devastated," Mazzetti said.

For out of towners this is not the town of La Jolla but on the Rincon Reservation. Just didn't want anyone to panic out there! :)

Uggggh that’s terrible. I wish I had taken some time-lapse style photos today from my vantage point. What was a regular desert morning is slowly turning into a brown-sky ugliness. (But of course I’ll take it and smile, compared to what all you folks are putting up with.)

You have some firefighters and equipment on the way from Washington state...

WooHoo! Thank you, Washington!

Get 'em one of these:

SIX water-dumping C-130s were supposed to be operating in California today (thank you, President Bush!).
I haven't seen any pics of 'em on the news, but I hope that really happened.

Thanks Lainie, it's good to hear that SLO came through for Malibu. I hear you are getting help from WA and WY. That's good as those guys know what they are doing.

I'll keep praying and reading this thread.

WOW!! I have lived in Los Angeles ( Eagle Rock) all my life. I will be 66 in several weeks. I cannot believe the intensity of these fires and winds! Ironically, we have hardly felt a breeze. It IS hot here today though.

Did you get a mask to wear? I am very concerned about all of you in Calif. We lived in Escondido (near the golf course) and husband worked in San Marcos on what is now called Furniture Row but was Industrial Drive. Worried.
Pray you will continue to be safe.

This was Duncan's Hunter's doing not Prs. Bush, cowgirl. Hunter was the one that pushed this. He was on at least two local tv stations today talking about it. I love Hunter! He's a "Can Do" guy!

It’s not working for me either. Hope they get it up soon. My sis-in-law in Lakeside said that 2 major transformers were lost last night and they’re being asked to conserve electricity. Wondering if SignOn San Diego is having power trouble.

Hunter says Miramar choppers grounded by red tape

Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Posted @ 10:21 AM

Congressman Duncan Hunter says there are four Marine helicopters on the ground at MCAS Miramar equipped with buckets that are ready to help fight the San Diego County wildfires but they are waiting on Cal Fire officials who say the choppers cannot fly without a Cal Fire crew member called a spotter on board.

Hunter says the Marine crew chiefs have plenty of expertise and could fly at a moment’s notice but are grounded until they work it out with Cal Fire.

Hunter also said there are six National Guard C 130s retardant-dropping airplanes headed to Point Mugu from Wyoming, Colorado and North Carolina that should arrive around 2:30 p.m.

He said he is working with firefighting leaders in the state to insure that some — if not all — of those planes are dedicated to San Diego.

“They will come to San Diego, I’ll make sure of it,” Hunter said.

Hi retrokitten,
My husband is at Rancho Bernardo Inn. They have a light crew in place, but basically they are closed down. Power off in surrounding neighborhoods. He said some homes around the golf course burned and others untouched. Damage at the Inn is mainly downed trees and ash everywhere.
I think everything is pretty calm in the area. He said the LE in the area are tired and want to maybe open things up later tonight if possible.... power has to be on first.
Some people being let in Poway area.
Looks like they will definitely be letting people back in by tomorrow at the latest.
