LA Times ^ | 9:35 AM PDT, October 21, 2007 | Associated Press

UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Karl, those people went down very early this morning, they should be there by now. We've sent from Oakland, Sonoma, Sacramento and probably other places.

We really do care about you guys. Many of us have family and friends near you.

I’m just going on what pretty much every reporter says, both on TV and radio broadcasts that I’ve heard. There are obviously some big problems in the management of that county, as far as fire goes. You don’t think there are? Did you hear Spitzer’s remarks this morning? He was mad as hell.

Trying so hard to keep up at where these fires are located but it is hard to get exact info being on East Coast.

Don't feel bad. I am here breathing the smoke and I still don't know all these names of towns and canyons and areas. All I know is the air is so very unpleasant to breathe. I am in Long Beach and no danger but the smoke is EVERYWHERE.

Fire hits Rincon church
Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Posted @ 2:03 PM

The church on the Rincon Indian reservation burned early this morning as the Poomacha fire roared through the Pauma Valley.

Several homes also burned, said tribal councilman Bo Mazzetti.

"We've lost a lot of our older buildings we had, that have been here for years and years," he said about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday. "Our church, our Catholic church, we lost that."

The loss is a spiritual blow to the tribe, he said.

"That's something we've all attended, that church, it's devastating to see that," he said.

Fire surrounded the reservation at dawn, he said, and the firestorm was particularly fierce about 8 a.m. Flames died down some two hours later.

"A lot of our members lost houses, we're still assessing that," he said. "Tomorrow we have federal officials coming in."

About half of the tribe's 650 members live on the reservation. The damage has been hard to assess this morning, Mazzetti said. "It's spread out all over the reservation," he said. "There's no one area."

The fire burned some buildings near the Harrah's Rincon casino owned by the tribe, but not the casino-hotel complex, where about 350 people and 75 workers gathered to protect themselves from the flames.

The fire began on the La Jolla Indian reservation to the east.

"La Jolla is pretty devastated," Mazzetti said.

Efforts to reach officials at the La Jolla reservation by phone were unsuccessful.

I’m not a meterologist but I can tell you all that an upper-level wind shift is definitely beginning to take shape. The San Gabriel mountains, to my south, have been clear until this morning. Now, smoke is starting to make its way north. An ugly, very large brown haze is starting to creep over the mountains toward the AV.

Channel 10 in SD shows the onshore winds are returning -- humidity and dew points coming up, temperatures going down. Air quality terrible as all the smoke blown off shore is now coming back and will stagnate between the coast and the mountains.

I took a long break, Global... Temps in L.A. are hovering around 90F, so hotter in Orange County... The fierceness of the heat is accentuated by all the particulate matter in the air now...

Nights are mild.

There were San Luis Obispo FF’s putting hot spots out in the Malibu canyons before nightfall on Sunday. They were interviewed briefly on TV. Everyone in southern CA is so grateful for all the communities that have sent help.
