UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

At least one stadium seems to be coming in handy right now. IMO no government entity should be involved in financing stadiums for the purpose of sports alone, but if a stadium is designed and located to stringent specifications to make it ideal for sheltering people in the event of emergency, then a certain amount of taxpayer subsidy is appropriate.

According to the OC Fire authority website (http://www.ocfa.org/ocfamain.asp?pgn1=3), Industry Hills is taking horses.They list the following under “Animal Evacuation”
OC Fair Ground is closed to animals at this time.
Industry Hills Expo Center will take 125 large animals (626) 330-0324. They are located off of the 60 Freeway between the 57 and 605 freeways
Orange County Animal Shelter off of The City Drive will take 150 dogs and 75 cats.

Most of us know about the wildfires in Southern California right now. Evacuation facilities for horses are overflowing already. If you can house some horses (or other pets!) temporarily, or if you have a truck and trailer to move horses for someone who may not have transportation, here are some places you can post so that those in need can find you.

Evacuees are invited to stable their horses at a horse farm in the Thermal-Indio area.A private citizen, recommended by a California Department of Food & Agriculture veterinarian, has volunteered enough property, staff, food, and water resources to care for up to 1,700 horses. For more information, County residents can call (760) 399-2716.

Give me a break! Fires don’t care about partisanship.
KPBS has been giving great coverage and when their radio lines got fried, another station opened up their airwaves for them TO HELP THE CITIZENS IN THE COMMUNITY DURING THIS TRAGEDY. Public Radio was doing what they are supposed to do in this case—give them credit for it!
When the going gets tough, folks pull together. Except those who can’t take off their partisan glasses.
I keep hearing how San Diego FF don’t have any resources available, no water, no water pressure, no access, no roads, ?????????????
Much has been rebuilt from the last fire.
The rules and regs are high for bldging and rebuilding.
The areas involved are established areas some from the last 10+ years.
As a 60 year native here, I don’t see some of the problems some think there are.
I live in an apt. in the city near downtown so am not in the direst fire areas

One of the shortcomings in that last firestorms were the volunteer fire districts in the East County that were staffed by off duty City of SD and other cities FFs. It works fine when there is no emergency, but once you go to full deployment, you have shortcomings.
We have the choppers, it is the weather that is the problem.
Besides the civilian choppers, we have many local military choppers to jump in when asked

I’m not a meterologist but I can tell you all that an upper-level wind shift is definitely beginning to take shape. The San Gabriel mountains, to my south, have been clear until this morning. Now, smoke is starting to make its way north. An ugly, very large brown haze is starting to creep over the mountains toward the AV.

Hey there, the threads have been interesting. so many in other areas and other states have interesting views on what they think is going on vs the reality.
Guess they had it wrong... I wasn’t paying close attention to the wheres & hows.
