UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Sorry, didn’t hear. I’ve listened to him for years. Hence the Butterknife that many call him.
BurbankKarl: have whoever created the thread ping the mod to change it to 2007 CA Firestorms or something like that
I agree with Karl. Admin Mod--Can we do that?
(Ernest, has not been online for a while--I don't think he would mind.)
What does backfiring mean in this respect?
Thanks ...got some young kin out in Foothill Ranch....I think not sure just where though..
I'm no expert--it just sounds BIG and BAD!
My folks are in Stockton CA, they are heartsick for their friends in So Cal.
Backfiring is FFs lighting fires to burn fuel out in front of fire line. They do this to rob the the fire and sometimes turn it back on itself.
You’ll see them on TV walking with the drip torches doing “backfiring”
backfiring is when they light a fire in front of a fire.....to burn off fuel in front of it...usually near a road or dirt lot...to create a larger fire break.
the point is the public knows better than the public safety official....who often arent seeing the bigger picture.

Fingers crossed your right!
Heck, they are nice to us Easterners too with the hurricane thing.
I do think that 3 massive fires merging into a gihugic fire would be even worse.
They don’t need that! I don’t think I could live in California, but it is a beautiful place and I have great sympathy for everyone dealing with this right now.
I think I’m gonna mosey on outside and see if I can see anything.
I sure hope not...
Might have heard it wrong, but I think I just heard them say 500 square miles are on fire, or have been burned...wow
Prayers for everyone who might be in trouble here. How terribly frightening.
It's the act usually described by TV reporters as 'a very serious blow up in the fire'.
Praying for her safety. I can’t believe this. The aerial photo upthread reminded me of Greece a few months back. My house backs up to woods here, and with our severe drought, fire has crossed my mind on more than one occassion. But this must be the worst ever in CA.
My friends who lived in CV moved back east about eight years ago. He is in the Navy, so they survived Ivan a couple of years ago while living in Pensacola.
Me too..
I have a friend who has a few homes in Temecula. So far, they look unscathed. I hope it stays that way. He is out of town on a cross country freight run in his truck.
LOL, luv them reporters
