Analysis: Violence in Abrahamic faiths

By SHAUN WATERMAN

UPI Homeland and National Security Editor

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- There are similarities between violent extremists of all the Abrahamic religious faiths, according to a new study of ultra-Zionist settlers in Israel, fundamentalist Muslims in Britain and white supremacist Christians in the United States.

The study found that extremists of all three religions shared a black-and-white, them-and-us mentality; saw themselves as victims; and tended to be drawn from alienated communities that were either culturally or geographically isolated from the mainstream of society.

The study, conducted by the East-West Institute, a non-partisan global think tank based in New York, Moscow and Brussels, started from the proposition that “there was something to be learned by looking at violent extremism across religious faiths,” institute Vice President Neville Bugwadia told United Press International.

“Religiously motivated violence exists across all of three of the Abrahamic faiths,” reads the study, which aimed “to better comprehend and confront recruitment and incitement to violence, regardless of which faith is claimed as ideological justification” by “focusing on what compels individuals to take violent action in the name of religion, and to recruit others to do likewise -- and in what manner religion plays a role in these decisions.”

Jews who want to live in the Land of Israel should not be put on the same level as murdering Islamists.

This is called propaganda, the worst I’ve seen in a while. It is sickening.

Howls, Bruce. Howls of derisive laughter.

Just politically correct propaganda to draw moral equivalences between Christianity, Judaism and Islam. In other words: Christians and Jews have some extremists, too, so you can’t accuse Islam of being a violent religion.

Sounds like the Democratic Party's base.

what a piece of propaganda this is....

What the article is talking about is common to all cults. Basically, a cult is a social grouping that uses belief as its main focus. Cults use a "truth," like an interpretation of the Bible or some adjunct book like the Book of Mormon, or something entirely different, like Dianetics, that only members have. Cults promote customs of dress or behavior, to make members experience distust from those outside the group, which fosters an us-them mentality. And they use fear of punishment or expulsion to maintain behavior.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that cults share so common characteristics. Moslems, Mormons, Christian Scientists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Scientologists, and many more. Just saying...

The Jewish religion’s prayers are for peace and Jews work for peace in every aspect of their beings, individual, communal and national; quite in contract the sons of Ishmael who love war and wiping out anyone not Islamic. Judaism works to create things that help improve the world - look at the astounding number of scientists, nobel prize winners, humanitarians, contributing to the advancement and wellbeing of every country in which they’ve lived. Christianity has followed Judaism’s moral code and desire to do good to one’s fellow man. Islam gives the world nada - only killing. What a complete falsehood this propaganda piece is from the enemies of the Judaeo Christian heritage. The author is an apologists for Islamoterrorists - claiming so falsely that others are just like Islamterrorists. They are not. This article is a piece of rubbish.

This one is really too easy, but the discriminating scholar need not look further than the “non-partisan” claim to know the authors are dishonest, so proceed with caution, and wear rubber boots.

“Religiously motivated violence exists across all of three of the Abrahamic faiths.”

Technically, a correct statement, but a very misleading one. How many violent Christian extremists are there? A tiny fraction of one percent? Same for Jews. Violent Islamic extremists are common as dirt. Their sympatizers are probably a majority of Muslims.

Same with the Christian claims:

Wikipedia:
Christian Identity believers reject the beliefs of most modern day Christian denominations and claim that modern Christian churches are teaching a heresy: the belief that God’s promises to Israel (through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) have been expanded to create a spiritual people of “Israel,” which constitutes the Christian “Church”. In turn, most modern Christian denominations and organizations denounce Christian Identity as heresy and condemn the use of the Christian Bible as a basis for promoting anti-Semitism.

"Abrahamic religious faiths" What a load of crap.

The only "faith' that is violent is the Islamic one, and anyone with a lick of sense would know Islam was founded by Mohammad in 635, and has nothing to do with Abraham. It is only Islamic wishful thinking and folklore that tries to tie Islam with Abraham.

Christianity teaches love, not violence. History teaches paganism, the "religion" of the atheist has been the most violent force on earth. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi min, Kahn, the Roman Empire, the Egyptian Pharaohs, etc etc.

Seems the Christian bashers have selective memory problems when it comes to history, and have a problem with FACTS in the here and now.

Seems they claim to have found "violent extremists" that carry the banner of Judaism or Christianity as they blow up stuff and fly airplanes into buildings as well. I sure wish they would actually name these groups.

Other than Islam, which was founded by Mohammad in 635 or so, and has no "Abrahamic" ties whatsoever (except in their wildest dreams) The only other violent extremist groups are Pagan atheists.

Obviously you haven’t a clue what Christianity is. It is exactly this type of thinking that groups like this take advantage of in spreading their hatred.
