Air Force explains nuclear weapons incident
Minot Daily News ^ | 20 October 2007 | Eloise Ogden

Posted on 10/20/2007 6:05:07 AM PDT by Racehorse

Airmen not following the proper procedures that they were trained in, along with a lack of leadership and supervision, caused the incident in late August where nuclear weapons were loaded on a B-52 bomber at Minot Air Force Base and were flown to Barksdale AFB in Louisiana, said Maj. Gen. Richard Newton, assistant deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements.

“Their lack of attention in detail is where the failure occurred,” Newton said at a news conference at the Pentagon Friday.

. . .

He said the incident began with the failure of airmen to conduct a required examination before the weapons were loaded on the B-52.

. . .

He said Air Combat Command officials made the decision to relieve from duty three colonels – Minot AFB’s Bomb Wing commander and Maintenance Group commander, and the Operation Group commander at Barksdale. Barksdale’s Operation Group commander was Col. Todd Westhauser.

Newton declined to go into details about others involved in the incident and any actions against them, but he said it was fewer than 100 people.

. . .

“This was an unacceptable error,” Newton said. He said the B-52 involved was from Barksdale. He said a lack of attention to detail and personnel not following checklist procedures caused the incident.

So what about the chatter yesterday about one of the warheads never made it back. Hear any updates on that?

> ... they shouldn’t have to explain it to the world.

They have to explain it because:
1. word leaked out, and
2. both houses of Congress are awash in Chicken Littles
(not all necessarily Democrats)

In the Navy and USMC, the pilots do a preflight check that includes their weapons.

Why haven’t the aircrew been investigated?

No, but I DO recall that at the very beginning of published reports of this there were 2 versions.....one said 5, the other said 6, and then it went back and forth.

One thing that makes me at least willing to believe that this is way more than incompetence/laziness is that the AF claims 70 people are disciplined......so I think that a “revolt” is plausible based upon that. Seems to me that 70 people in what must be such a long and widespread chain simply cannot be ascribed to incompetence and laziness.....I just don’t believe it. There is more here than that, and a revolt is just one of many possibilities for the whole truth. The stories and horn-tootong of the lefties in this just assures that we may never know the truth.

Points well taken but

...none of which should not have happened during a war.

It’s all info no matter the source—I take all w/a grain of...

Matter of fact, what used to be considered reliable sources have proven to be not quite so; and others, some truth woven together w/whatever...

All something to be considerd.

What is truth...

Minot is sometimes
singled out as a 'troubled'
city when people

discuss 'fringe' issues
like wide-spread Satanism
and military

links to fringe issues
like organized drug running.
I wonder if more

might be happening
behind-the-scenes to prompt this
open admission.

I guess you already explained it, unless you have something to add

**Operation Chrome Dome among others.**

That is till several of the B-52s colided with the KC-135s. Then all were grounded to alert pads.

The first “tinyurl” in your post #6 above appears to be your own concoction. I reject the totality of it.

But it contains, as you say, “some truth woven together w/whatever”.......one example of “whatever” is (once again) the claim of 6 mysterious deaths.....I’ve seen that one debunked sooooo many times that I am justifiably suspicious of anything I see that still offers it as intrigue to any who are willing to fall for it.

I’ll grant that it seemed to cover his comments well. I wasn’t faulting the paper. It just seems he didn’t provide much information that pertained to the incident.

As you say, it may come out later.

1) Never mix the storage of weapon systems with and without the nuclear package. They should be in separate bunkers.
2) Clear records of what is stored where must be maintained, and pass regular inspections.
3) Weapons moves are ordered by serial number, and the current status of each is well documented.
4) “MOSR’s” are coordinate with other Base agencies (Safety), who check the records prior to the move.
5) The ‘load crew’ is different from the ‘move crew’ and the ‘load crew’ is responsible for checking the records again.
6) The flight crew has final responsiblity!
7) The Base and/or Wing Commander is responsible for ensuring all these procedures are in place and well rehearsed, trained, inspected, evaluated, and documented.
