CHATTANOOGA - A live Nativity scene that has been part of Chattanooga's annual Grand Illumination has been scrapped.
Chattanooga Downtown Partnership executive director Carla Pritchard says the representation of the birth of Jesus Christ was eliminated after several people complained.
The Partnership receives funding from the city.
The illumination event takes place the day after Thanksgiving and begins the holiday shopping season and the downtown Winter Days & Lights event.
The Nativity had been performed since the 1980s by First Baptist Church of Soddy-Daisy.
Church pastor Dr. Seton Tomyn says the decision is disappointing, but understands diverse cultures are part of the city.

My advice for Chattanoogans to shop elsewhere this year. Then, let the city consider its lost tax revenues a bit.
What about the majority, whatever happened to majority rule? What is this, dictatorship by a tiny vocal minority? The majority need to fill the streets and let out a roar that will never be ignored again.
Big Deal there is a very simple solution they said they had several complaints so get more Chattanooga’s too complain about this choice and make it clear when election time comes around your vote can easily go to the ones who voted to retain it.
Majority rule works for some elections (not President, as we all know). Beyond that, things get more complex.
For example, I suspect there are communities where the majority of people would like to ban guns.
Do you think they should be able to?
I didn’t think so.
Pretty ironic, given the huge Civil War connection with this town.
My wife and I vacationed for a few days there. Stayed at the train station rebuilt as a hotel. Had a very good time, but the fact is the town is small, and rather drab.
Nice people though.
I just can’t get my mind wrapped around this particular city doing this, given its history.
Right. Christmas is about a ‘winter festival’,
and God sent his Son into the world with the good news of, “Seasons’ Greetings!”
So do it separate from the city-supported event.
They should’ve have posed with sex toys and worn leather gear like in San Fransicko. That city had no problem funding an anti-Christian event.
The State that is prohibited from supporting my faith is also prohibited from denouncing it.
However her email is: cpritchard@thecdp.org
I sent her an email and phoned the Mayor’s office: 423-757-5152 and was told they had been getting A LOT of phone calls over this situation.
Keep of the heat up FREEPERS!
I complained about the 'greening' of the Empire State Building. A fat lot of good that did me.
The few people need to literally go to hell! The City of Chattanooga needs to be boycotted for at least a decade!
I sent an email to the pastor at setontomyn@hotmail.com admonishing him not to give up but rather rally a few thousand Christians in a counter protest. Christian Soldiers, Arise! Or else perish.
If he understands tossing out Christ at Christmas as appeasing 'diverse cultures' he deserves to lose his congregation!
What a wimp!

I always wonder about pastors with PHD’s.
What an absolute coward to give into the city with out a fight.
The war on Christmas continues this year. Its time for Christians to stand up and be as demanding as anti Christians have been. Become militant, become demanding, become a pain in the backside of public officials who cave to atheists and others who just look their way and get results. Let them know you will not sit by and allow symbols of Christianity to be torn away without a major fight. Otherwise, there will soon be nothing left.
If you think 'Noogaville is drab now, you should have seen it in the '80's before they started rebuilding the riverfront. It was just a dirty little mill town then and NOBODY went downtown after dark. By comparison, today it's a nice place to step out on the town without too much worry about being thumped on the head for your wallet.....
1. Tennessee? Oh, good grief.
2. “...was eliminated after several people complained.”? Okay. Will it be REINSTATED “after several people complain”?
