It’s so wonderful Al Gore shattered the glass ceiling for Androids to win the Nobel Peace Prize! For a cool million-dollar prize, now the Middle East is filled with peace. Muslim fanatics no longer kill. Al-Qaeda now loves America. Iran adores Israel. The Turks are wild about the Kurds!

(Even Democrats are now full of love for NASCAR, no longer thinking you catch hepatitis by watching cars racing.)

If you look at the history of this award, Willy Brandt got the Nobel Peace Prize for raising awareness about the fact that he was a useful idiot. Mohamed ElBaradei got the Peace Prize for his efforts not to stop the nuclear mullahs. And for that Muslim name. Doctors Without Borders got the Peace Prize for the “Without Borders” part. Environmental activist tree-hugger Wangari Maathai got the Peace Prize for planting trees. Maybe Al Gore got the Peace Prize for being a tree.

I suspect the real reason Gore got the prize is because eminent statesman Osama bin Laden is dead. But, to be fair, (now that Gore won his little trinkets), ostensibly Gore received the prize because he made a movie about global warming, dealing at length with such pressing scientific issues as Gore’s childhood, where Gore went to school, where Gore went to college and how some moron cowboy stole the election from him. Gore humbly notes that Erich Segal’s Love Story was based on Gore and Tipper, that Gore discovered the Love Canal, fathered the Internet, invented cable TV. A U.K. High Court said Gore “exaggerated” in his movie — now who would have seen that coming?!

Gore’s movie claims a study shows that four polar bears died because of global warming — couldn’t find ice in the North Pole, so they drowned. Turns out they drowned in a storm, the High Court of London found. Gore misread the study (you know, like the 2000 election).

On a roll, Dorky’s movie claims the ice caps are melting because of SUVs and that Hurricane Katrina was created by global warming — an absurdity. Climate scientist Dr. William Gray notes that between the years 1900 and 1949, there were over a hundred hurricanes; but from 1957 to 2006 (supposedly when things got cooking) there were fewer hurricanes — 83. Of the top 10 hurricanes since 1851, 5 occurred before 1930, only 3 occurred since the mid-’70s. All the evidence shows the strength and frequency of hurricanes have nothing to do with global warming but instead are caused by Karl Rove’s racist weather machine.

There are so many idiotic errors in Gore’s award-winning dorkumentary (ice caps melt, ocean gets cooler = more hurricanes!), his prize fell under “peace”, not science. Yet if you listen to the Nobel committee hacks, have an Ice Age and you’ll have world peace. But if you have an Ice Age you either get mass migration or millions of people starve as food supplies dwindle. Warm the planet a tad, and you’ll see regions of the earth currently buried in ice become arable, which means more food and more scantily clad chicks. I’m all for global warming.

All this is so obvious, the Nobel committee missed it. Which is how Dorky ended up with his peace prize for an eco-nutter theory that you get war by having global spring break weather. If the warmonutters were right about man-made global warming, then whoever is pumping the most C02 deserves the Peace Prize.

The criteria for handing out Peace Prizes is so convoluted, Gore was bound to get it.

Take “Mahatma” Gandhi. He was India’s spiritual and political leader who led the push for independence from Britain, inspired non-violent civil rights movements around the world by pioneering the method of non-violent disobedience or passive resistance (such as mass civil disobedience), all rooted in his commitment to total non-violence — all of which led to his not getting the Nobel Peace Prize.

There’s more:

* FDR Secretary of State Cordell Hull convinced his boss to turn away 937 Jewish refugees who had sailed in the S.S. St. Louis across the Atlantic from Germany to escape Nazi persecution in 1939. Forced to sail back to Europe (after Cuba and Canada refused entry), many of the refugees were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Hull got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945 for never using the phrase ‘perfecting Jews’ on a zero-rated show.

* Yasser Arafat won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. His qualification to receive the prize consisted of his “moderating” his rhetoric — avoid saying he wants to murder all Jews. As part of his new moderation after getting the prize, Arafat called for “one million martyrs” to march on Jerusalem and he ordered the “Second Intifada” against Jews. There were no calls to revoke Arafat’s Nobel Prize since he’d never say, ‘perfecting Jews’. That would be over the top.

* President Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War and brought down the liberals’ once favorite monument — the Berlin Wall. The Nobel Peace Prize went to the Soviet communist, Mikhail Gorbachev, not Reagan.

* Reagan’s military build-up and Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) forced the Soviets to moderate, return to the negotiating table, agree to major nuclear weapons cuts, ending the Soviet Union’s superpower status, leading to the downfall of the Soviet Union in ‘91. The Nobel Peace Prize went to Rigoberta Menchu for fabricating a story of oppression of Indians in Guatemala.

* Costa Rica’s president Oscar Arias Sanchez did everything he could during the ‘80s to frustrate Reagan’s effort to aid the “contras” in Nicaraqua and to topple the communist Sandinista government there. Forced by the “contras” to hold an election, the Sandinistas got booted, peace and democracy won. The Nobel Peace Prize went to Oscar Arias Sanchez.

* After 9/11, President George W. Bush took military action and toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan, liberating 25 million people there. The Nobel Peace Prize went to Jimmy Carter.

* Kofi Annan and the U.N. won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Gunnar Berge, Nobel committee honcho at the time, said that Kofi “Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the U.N.” Kofi devoted himself while the Hutus devoted themselves to slaughtering 500,000 ethnic Tutsis in Rwanda (devoted Kofi was head-honcho of U.N. Peacekeeping Operations at the time), the Sudanese military and Janjaweed devoted themselves to genocide in Darfur, etc. Kofi also devotedly oversaw the U.N.’s Oil-for-Food program in Iraq, the U.N.’s Child-Rape-for-Food program in West Africa, etc.

Le Duc Tho, Hull, Brandt, Arafat, Annan, Carter, Gorbachev, Menchu — given the line-up, Dorky should feel right at home.

When We Don’t Know What To Say

Roy Clark and his father sat in the family car in the funeral home parking lot for several minutes. As a teenager, he wasn’t sure how to respond when his dad put his head in his hands and moaned, "I don’t know what to say!"

A friend from their church had been in a car accident. She had survived, but her three daughters had all died when a truck hit their vehicle. What could they say to their friend at a time like this?

In the Bible we are told that during Job’s time of grieving, his three friends came to mourn with him and to comfort him. For the first 7 days they sat and wept with him because he was in deep sorrow (Job 2:11-13). "No one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great" (v.13). Their presence alone was a comfort to him.

But then they began to lecture. They told Job he must have sinned and that God was punishing him (4:7-9).

When Job was finally able to respond, he told his friends what he needed from them. He asked for reasons to continue hoping (6:11), for kindness (v.14), and for words that did not presume guilt (vv.29-30).

Remembering the story of Job and his friends may help us when we don’t know what to say.

To people in their grief and pain,
To weep with them and show Your love
