Big Brother at school

"FREEDOM of education, being an essential of civil and religious liberty . . . must not be interfered with under any pretext whatever," the party's national platform declared. "We are opposed to state interference with parental rights and rights of conscience in the education of children as an infringement of the fundamental . . . doctrine that the largest individual liberty consistent with the rights of others insures the highest type of American citizenship and the best government."
That ringing endorsement of parental supremacy in education was adopted by the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1892, which just goes to show what was possible before the Democratic Party was taken hostage by the teachers unions. (Wondrous to relate, the platform also warned that "the tendency to centralize all power at the federal capital has become a menace," blasted barriers to free trade as "robbery of the great majority of the American people for the benefit of the few," and pledged "relentless opposition to the Republican policy of profligate expenditure.")
Today, on education as on so much else, the Democrats sing from a different hymnal. When the party's presidential candidates debated at Dartmouth College recently, they were asked about a controversial incident in Lexington, Mass., where a second-grade teacher, to the dismay of several parents, had read her young students a story celebrating same-sex marriage. Were the candidates "comfortable" with that?
"Yes, absolutely," former senator John Edwards promptly replied. "I want my children . . . to be exposed to all the information . . . even in second grade . . . because I don't want to impose my view. Nobody made me God. I don't get to decide on behalf of my family or my children. . . ."

Free men and women do not entrust to the state the molding of their children's minds and character. As we wouldn't trust the state to feed our kids, or to clothe them, or to get them to bed on time, neither should we trust the state to teach them.
The key word here is trust since that's exactly what parents are doing. Most are clueless about what is actually being taught to their children both inside and outside of the classroom.

Typical clueless liberal; doesn't think he has the right to protect his children and decide what's right for them at an age when they can't decide for themselves.
He's abdicated his responsibility as a parent and deserves what he gets.

Would he be so understanding if his second grader's teacher had the kids reading from books by authors like Ann Coulter or Ayn Rand? What if the teacher thought that kids needed a class in gun safety so he took them out to a shooting range?

To: Sopater; All
Thank you for posting this. It’s one of the best recent articles I’ve seen on education and it is actually in the MSM.
American families have become too busy and too tired to stand their ground.
When the traditional family is destroyed, chaos ensues, and our children become the victims of social experiments.
I wrote about this yesterday in regard to Hillary’s plan to extend family leave. It is a ruse to make sure that mothers stay in the workforce, so unionizing daycare workers can get benefits and universal preK becomes the law of the land. One of the things the Dems (and some Republicans as well) want to “take away from us for the common good” is OUR CHILDREN.
Are we going to let them?

I don't want to impose my view.
Edwards is speaking about his own children in this quote. Let it sink in what he's saying. He has just abdicated his role as father. There are certain things I hope my children never see and I will do all in my power to protect them from such things. When the times comes I will explain how homosexuality is wrong and where it leads. I'll show them the statistics of the 'gay' lifestyle and I'll show them in the Bible where such behavior is condemned. This Edwards, who doesn't want to impose his view on his own children, I can guarantee, were he ever to get the White House, would be all about imposing.

Here in Virginia we have a religious exemption statute.
The statute, §22.1-254 (B)(1) reads:
A school board shall excuse from attendance at school: any pupil who, together with his parents, by reason of bona fide religious training or belief is conscientiously opposed to attendance at school. For purposes of this subdivision, "bona fide religious training or belief" does not include essentially political, sociological or philosophical views or a merely personal moral code.
We are homeschooling our 5 yr old son under the provisions of this statute. Here is some additional information concerning it.

Betcha he wouldn’t feel this way about opening the school day with a Bible reading and prayer, as was common practice in this country for decades.

...before the Democratic Party was taken hostage by the teachers unions. Look into The Frankfurt School of the mid 1900's for the source of much of what's happened in American education. Then, read "The American Citizen's Handbook" of that same era (that the NEA itself published) to see how far the NEA has turned.

I'm fairly certain Edwards kids go to the very best PRIVATE SCHOOLS...Besides that....Mrs. Edwards runs THAT household...and probably dictates what their kids are learning in their PRIVATE SCHOOLS.

The Marxist´s government school indoctrination center.
Remember please: They aren´t leftists, liberals, progressives, or socialists. It is Marxism that drives all them.
We are fighting the most important and serious threat that our nation have ever faced and we don´t even call it what it is! It is Marxism!
The most powerful weapon that the Marxist have to use against freedom are our government schools, universities, and colleges.
We can survive a nuclear suit case bomb,,,,BUT,,,freedom will NOT survive if the Marxist who run our schools from top to bottom succeed in indoctrinating the next generation of voters.
