WASHINGTON Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison told a Texas magazine she will not seek re-election after this term and may leave the Senate as early as 2009, according to excerpts published on the magazine's Web blog on Monday.
Hutchison told Texas Monthly in an interview to be fully published in December that she would end her Senate career in 2012, whether or not she runs for governor.
Stepping down in two years "has to be considered," the Texas Republican senior senator is quoted as saying in the excerpts.
Hutchison declined an interview request from The Associated Press, but a spokesman for the senator confirmed the accuracy of the magazine excerpts.
If she does run for governor and wins, once she steps down as senator a temporary appointment would be made by the governor to fill the Senate seat until an election is held. It's conceivable she would get to make that interim selection if she's the incoming governor.
"Is it better for Texas for me to leave early and give someone else a chance to start building seniority before the class of 2013? I think it probably is," Hutchison said.
Hutchison said is not yet a candidate for governor, but would like to be.

One less Republican that is good - moving on is BAD NEWS.
At least 12 retiring fom the House. The Senate is already very shaky. My take is the the ‘pubs threw away their advantages by becoming like big spending dems, pro illegal amnesty, etc. War in Iraq hurts them just because, we as a nation, want quick fixes. Economy? Who knows by a year from now. The sheeple in the middle look like they are ready to be swayed by cheap promises from the dims.
At least she’s not going to retire now and add another open seat for Republicans to defend in 2008.
I hate to see her go. She’ll be a great gov, tho.
She runs for Gov, I’m not voting for her. She holds some very liberal positions. Supported amnesty before voting against it.
She’s not pro life either.
“At least shes not going to retire now “
The problem as I see it is, does she lose votes because some people won’t vote for someone who is gonna retire right after the election?

Too liberal for my tastes. Definitely country club Republican.
It may be immigration that has persuaded her to bow out. With the influx of Hispanic voters, re-election will not be easy.
She’s leaving because she has the inside track for VP. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s picked. She has mentioned publicly that she was interested in becoming someone’s running mate.
The Republican party has only its self to blame for the coming disaster.
Remove the $ sign and it will work.
The GOP will win statewide races in 2008 and 2010 but by 2012 Texas is going to be trending Democrat with the growth of the Hispanic population as well as the urban growth in Houston, Dallas and Austin.
Yep, the glass is half empty and not half full.
Why oh why don't more people see this? /s
refresher bump
Competing with the dem's for the dead and illegal vote and winning would be a tough row to hoe if one has conviction for what is right.
