Staph Infection Kills Virginia Student, Prompts Closing of 21 Schools Tuesday , October 16, 2007
BEDFORD, Va. A high school student has died as the result of a treatment-resistant staph infection, prompting Virginia officials to shut down 21 schools to keep the illness from spreading.
Ashton Bonds, 17, a senior at Staunton River High School in Bedford, Va., died Monday after being hospitalized for a week with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, his mother said.
"I want people to know how sick it made my son," Veronica Bonds said.

Not to be too gross here, but given the nasal passage colonization, if you work in a jail or a hospital or so forth, picking the nose would probably be a really bad idea. Tissues only and they go in the trash.
You sound like you are blessed w/ a good immune system, Najida, and haven’t had to take many antibiotics. I’m glad for you.
I think we might have been talking about 2 different things. I was talking about “eradication” of MRSA — getting rid of the MRSA from the whole body which has proven to be extremely difficult. Sounds like you are using hibiclens to wash the hands, abrasions, etc., preventing contamimination which is appropriate.
Hibiclens is an antiseptic and continuous use of it over the whole body might rid the body of the necessary good bacterial flora. I don’t think I could recommend it for showering on an ongoing basis. But the data is subject to frequent updates.

“They should call it what it is commonly known at hospitals, MRSA. Deadly.”
Our local WVEC dropped that little bomb at the very end of the news report a couple of days ago, and so quickly, it was hard to catch.
My spouse heard MRSA and the jaw dropped.
They should have closed the school immediately.

What’s the deal with people I see wearing “scrubs” when they go shopping after/before work or whatever? Seems to me they are either picking up germs and taking them to their job, or the reverse, or both. I don’t like it, because it seems to show an ignorance that I would not expect from health care workers. I suppose I’m expecting too much these days.
Thanks. It is very interesting, 21 schools closed. I bet they just don’t have any idea how far this has spread.
Hopesfully, the school officials will do something constructive while the schools are closed.
Cleaning with bleach and lysol would help the schools. Opening windows letting some of the places air out would also help. Teachers and health officials should encourage children to have their sneakers washed weekly and as needed. Any open sore should be taken care of immediately.
I just hope that no other kids die.
But I do have to wonder, is more of this in the future? I am afraid so.

Darn that “temporary unavailable”!!!
Sorry for the three posts.

Exactly,
I’m not bathing in the stuff, just trying to keep open areas from getting infected and taking precautions. I’m a walking warmap....I get cuts, scrapes, bites, pecks, scratches all the time.
I’d be one giant boil if I didn’t have decent immune system and at least washed my booboos with something. I’m sitting here now looking at a big scratch on my foot wondering if I got it from the dog, the rooster or the brairs by the back steps.

I am so worried about this! My great nephew came down with this infection along with others on his school football team in Culpeper, VA. His started with a little sore on his arm, arm swelled with fever. It was lanced and drained and he has been on medication. This happened about four weeks ago, and now this outbreak.
Why? What are you afraid of?
I wonder if good old-fashioned sulfa drugs are an option...
Single use, packaged wipes marketed by Purell are saturated with the same 61% alcohol gel that the OSHA, Department of Homeland Security, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend for health care professionals, first responders, and anyone else who may come in contact with infectious material.
Some of my contacts in state and Federal correctional systems report that in some institutions MRSA is an even greater threat than is AIDS or hepatitits.
In Arizona, for exampple, groups of cells have been enclosed in a negative-air pressure system to house inmates who are infected with MRSA, which most often is obtained in the course of intravenous drug use.
The over-prescription and misuse of antibiotics in clinical practice and the food animal industry over the years has given rise to several strains of bacteria that are resistant to several of the more commonly used antibiotics.
I carry Purell liquid gel or towlettes wherever I go, and I never sign charge and deposit slips, etc. using pens handed to me by bank tellers and retail cashiers.
One cause of the sudden increase in the frequency of such infections is the flood of illegal aliens into our country -- carrying sepsis-causing bacteria, tuberculosis, and of course, viruses largely related to the use of illegal substances...
Not against Gram-positive staph, strep, and other bugs..
Actually, bacteriophages have bbeen shown to carry bacterial genes which confer antibiotic reistance, Sinclair Lewis (”Arrowsmith”) notwithstanding...
