From the outset, the first lady has refused to take on the traditional role, but how will a country inured to peccadilloes react to a possible divorce?
The president's wife has gone missing. And the question of the day in France on Friday was: Has she gone for good?
Cecilia Sarkozy didn't vote for her husband, Nicolas, in May; she didn't accompany him to lunch with the Bushes in Maine last summer; and the woman at Sarkozy's side at a celebratory dinner after France's quarter- finals victory in the Rugby World Cup a week ago? Not his wife, but one of her closest friends.
The chic former model, in fact, has done nothing official since Bastille Day in July. And this weekend she is reportedly at a $1,000-a-night spa in Geneva while he's in Paris rooting for France in the rugby semifinals.
On Friday, a journalist for the newspaper L'Est Republicain, citing sources close to the presidential palace, reported that the couple was definitely getting divorced -- something the rest of the media have hinted at but not quite said for weeks. "Where has Cecilia Gone?" Le Parisien asked last week.
The French are a tolerant people. Their presidents have had mistresses and even fathered illegitimate children and life went on. But divorce? How . . . conventional. How . . . bourgeois. How . . . unconventional, actually.
"But we are ready to accept a divorce at the Elysee Palace," Christine Clerc, a French "first marriage" expert and author,in a phone interview. "In fact, it's the first time we can see it like this -- with our very own eyes. Before, the private lives of presidents were all hidden and many things were forbidden to be even discussed. Now we say, 'The first lady is gone.' "

Now, this is a good point. How .. . . . . how........unFrench.

The gossip loving French are demanding “transparence” from their leaders.
No more the Francois Mitterands leading a double life, having two families, and an illigitimate daughter, known to all the Press, but never a word in print.
Sarko needs a good talking to by the Don.... “stand up...act like a man” instead of this awful image :
“Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart
You’re shaking my confidence daily
Woh Cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home”
Music and Lyrics
Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel
Obviously her position has gone to her head.
From her history of leaving husband #1 with two little babies, living with Sarko, a married man with two children, marrying Sarko, then running off to NY with BF, leaving their 8 year old, now running off to Switzerland, I would say Cecilia’s position has always been, shall we say, horizontal.
So many women would give anything to be the First Lady of France!
Nicolas Sarkozy protected in possible divorce
AMID mounting speculation that President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to announce a divorce, legal experts have warned that his wife, Cécilia, could face obstacles in any dispute over a settlement because of his judicial immunity as head of state.
French media reports last Friday claimed that Sarkozy, 52, was about to issue a statement announcing the end of his marriage to Cécilia, 49, who has largely vanished from public view in recent weeks.
Since she helped negotiate the release in July of five Bulgarian medical staff convicted of infecting children with Aids in Libya, Cécilias only appearance has been at the funeral of her first husband last month.
From a legal point of view, even if Cécilia wants to launch divorce proceedings, she cant, said Guy Carcassone, an expert on the French constitution. Under a law passed last February, the president enjoys immunity from civil cases.
Sarkozy, worth £1.75m, and Cécilia have a son, Louis, 10, and two children each from their first marriages. Sarkozys spokesman refused to comment on press rumors".
Wow:
“Since she helped negotiate the release in July of five Bulgarian medical staff convicted of infecting children with Aids in Libya,....”
They were convicted.......and her lifestyle otherwise......
She should look up someone like Jesse Jackson or al sharptunne
Oh, for Pete’s sake.
I played in a Scrabble tournament yesterday (yes, there is such a thing) against a woman named Cecilia and had had that stupid song in my head all yesterday.
Now, it’s back. Thanks! :)
I have to admit, at 49 she’s got a darn good figure. Not that it matters, but she’s 5’10” and he’s 5’5”.
"But we are ready to accept a divorce at the Elysee Palace," Christine Clerc, a French "first marriage" expert and author,in a phone interview. The headline suggests MSM weasels at work. It won't bemuse the French, it is just fodder for those who didn't support Sarkozy in the first place. :')
.
“I have to admit, at 49 shes got a darn good figure. Not that it matters, but shes 510 and hes 55.
Actually he’s 5’6” rather than 5’5”, which is still quite short, but most of those Frenchmen are short. I’m a 5’8” tall woman, and I felt like a giant when over in France. I towered over many of the men and most of the women.
Well don't tell me, tell everybody else that says he's 5'5". Sarko.
