BREAKING NEWS! Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has won the inaugural Conservative Leadership Conference straw poll. Despite not appearing at the conference, Paul won convincingly with 33% of the vote. Mitt Romney, who addressed the conference in a town hall meeting and during a general session, finished second with 16%. Duncan Hunter, who also delivered a major address during the three-day event, finished third at 15%.

I think an excessively large federal government, with overly self important people in positions of power, is the problem.
A powerful government is not a bad thing, if there are decent people working there, and representing the common man, as opposed to being beholden to special interests.
One thing Ron Paul supported that I agree with. Term limits.
The reason we're in the "mess" we're in is because we failed to react to repeated attacks on our people and interests, opting instead for diplomacy or just pretending that it was a legal issue, instead of a challenge to our will to fight for ourselves.
As for the bills written so that only a lawyer could understand, I agree that most legislation today is often purposely designed to confuse so that it can hide a bunch of unnecessary pork and loopholes for special interest groups.
But "we the people" continue to elect lawyers! Go figure!
Thank you for you candid answers. I’m sure any type of dabate would be fruitless. Do a search on Paul and look for a thread entitled ‘Give Peace a Chance’ and I think you’ll find RP’s comments about a few submarines.
The larger mess of global jihad, is another issue. I tend to agree with you to a point, but I also recognize that in several important cases we have meddled where we shouldn't (such as the grand mosque incident in 1979).
I see our immigration policies, our often illogical foreign policies, and our monetary policy all being linked. This is not happening in a vacuum. Powerful people want things just as they are.
Our nuclear-weapons systems subs are magnificent. Ron Paul is clearly not a pacifist if he is willing to invoke an image of Armageddon with those subs. They have the power to destroy hundreds of cities anywhere on the planet.
Uh, I was there working the conference as a full access staff member. I can tell you for a fact that the straw poll was badly handled, IMHO. First of all, only the conference member attendees were told about the straw poll, which means the influx of people who came to see Gov. Romney were not even aware of the straw poll, since his first speaking engagement was sponsored privately (although open to the public), and had nothing whatsoever to do with the conference (the only connection was that it was in the same vicinity). Secondly, I expressed concern on a couple of occasions that the ballots were left unattended and in the open to conference attendees, and we actually caught a couple of Ron Paul supporters taking more than thier fair share.
So, let’s see: the majority of Romney supporters did not go to the conference itself but only to the events which featured him speaking and there were sneaky Ron Paul supporters...hmmmm, I’m not putting much stock in that straw poll. An honest representation would have been a race between Hunter and Romney, who are both my dream ticket candidates anyway!!!
The wacky Ron Paul supporters were pretty creepy. And nuttier than squirrel droppings.

Real leaders understand expediency and the benefit of a pragmatic approach.
I dissagree the "expedient"/"pragmatic" approach, has in the long run, more often than not come around to bite is in the ass.
Real leaders would have forward vision regarding the future consquences, of their decisions.
Some of us learned this lesson in the third grade: The Scorpion and the Frog
Again, nice fairy tale. Real world is much different.
