Ex-Mexican leader's statue felled
BBC NEWS ^ | 14 October 2007 | Staff

Opposition protesters in Mexico have torn down a bronze statue of the former president, Vicente Fox, just hours after it was erected.

They threw eggs at the monument in Boca del Rio in the state of Veracruz, before putting a rope around its neck and pulling it to the ground.

Many of the crowd were reported to be supporters of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.

It lost power after more than 70 years when Mr Fox was elected in July 2000.

More than 100 angry protesters are reported to have attacked the statue on Saturday morning, just after it had been put up by workers.

An inauguration ceremony scheduled for Sunday has now been cancelled.

"We came to represent society because we don't want this monument here," Adolfo Mota, a PRI lawmaker in Mexico's lower house of congress, told AP news agency.

Mr Fox is facing a financial probe into allegations he enriched himself during his presidency. He denies any wrongdoing.

Vincente’s statue could be useful as well as ornamental planted as a post in the border fence.

This cretin was in my city for a book signing the other day, talking about how the poor little illegals have to live in fear in Texas. I doubt if I’d want to have anything to do with the PRI, but I’m glad they pulled down the statue.

...isn’t Mr. Fox now in this country lecturing us on what we’re doing wrong?

you have to remember though that Fox’s party is considered to be the conservative and the others are much more left wing.

The PRI was a left leaning party, nominally, that mouthed leftist platitudes while preserving an oligarchy and suppressing both electoral and economic competition.

It murdered those who opposed it, if they were too reform minded. (See: Luis Donaldo Colossio, Cardinal Ocampo, others.)

Fox’s PAN (National Action Party) is seen as more pro-business and conservative, though not in the sense you or I understand conservatism in the US.

Fox’s victory over the corrupt PRI candidate in 2000 was a milestone, if only because it shook the power structure. Calderon, a PANista as well, won a very close election in 2006. The PRI candidate, Madrazo, came in third. The second place candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrado, was a true leftist. His party was the PRD, or Revoluationary Democratic Party. Its colors were yellow and black. Its politics were backward style socialism, not too far from Chavezism.

A whole lot of freepers have bought that lie hook, line and sinker. V. Fox and Calderon are smarter than compassionate conservatives.

Make Mexico a US colony and then absorb them as states during the next 50 years under OUR terms. Everyone wins except for the corrupt Mexican elite.

I was only comparing the photos with people jumping on the statue. Indeed there were dictators’ statues in the past torn down, but Saddam was the most recent case.
Where did I claim that Fox was comparable to Saddam?
Now if I’d be bold and go some steps further, I could make the case that Fox’ shares the blame for the illegal invasion of America and the murder of millions of Americans by illegals.
