An 'insult' to 9-11 victims? NYC honors Muslim holiday

One of America's foremost experts on Islam says New York's decision to honor a Muslim holiday this weekend shows the city has not learned an important lesson from the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

New York's famous Empire State Building is lit up green today in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid, the biggest festival in the Muslim calendar marking the end of Ramadan. City officials say the lighting, which will continue through Sunday, "will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hanukah."

Robert Spencer, the director of Jihad Watch, says city leaders do not recognize the observance is "an insult to the memory" of the people who were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"That's because they don't think that it has anything to do with Islam in general," says Spencer, "even though the people who did kill 3,000 on 9/11 in New York City were motivated by Islamic teachings -- teachings that have still, six years later, not been repudiated, not been even examined in depth or with any serious attempt at reform by American-Muslim advocacy groups."

According to Spencer, those groups need to be called to account to "act much more energetically against jihadism and Islamic supremacism." He says until those groups speak out against jihadism, those who call on them to do so will continue to be vilified.

The Jihad Watch director says the city has not learned an important lesson from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"This is just part of an ongoing problem really that we assume -- without evidence -- that the teachings that motivated 9/11 are repudiated by Muslims and are not deeply rooted within Islam," he asserts. "And as long as we continue to assume this without evidence, there are still going to be Muslims who act on these teachings in order to recruit terrorists and to justify violence in the name of Islam."

Spencer says he expects most people who might be tempted to speak out against New York City honoring Eid "will be cowed from doing so by the prospect of being labeled bigots or racists."

How about the United States officially surrender to the religion of Islam and just get it over with?

Ain't that we are doing now?

Muslims should not have any right to exist in the United States unless they convert to a different religion or give up god altogether.

And the treasonous press will highlite anyone as a racist or Islamapobic if they criticize this event.

A tourist boycott of New York City, especially the Empire State Building, seems appropriate.

“New York’s decision to honor a Muslim holiday”

And how about those plans to erect `Bienvenidos, Amigos!’ signs every few miles, facing south, all the way from San Diego, CA to Harlingen, TX?

Incredible . . . .

You might want to re-read the First Amendment.

Do we know who owns the building?

Does Robert Spencer think "New York" officially roots for the Giants football team just because the owner of the Empire State Building decided to light it up in blue after the Giants beat the Jets last week?

There I fixed it.

How about a boycott of all New York liberals?

Easy to find out. However, the root problem can be found living in the White House.

Our fearless leader needs to be measured for a straitjacket. Post Ramadan dinners indeed! Religion of peace. We all worship the same God.

Open our borders to anyone that wants in. Create an alliance with Mexico and Canada regardless of what American citizens want.

The muslims have as many holy days as their nations have ‘Holy Cities.’

I do not blame all muslims for that.

I do.

They hate us.

They all read from the same 'holy book.' If they're not killing us, or strapping explosives around their children's waists they're donating money to those that do.

America's great 'melting pot' days are over. The only ones that want to emigrate to the USA now are the scum from other countries or terrorists.

Lovely shade of green.

Now New York City can be referred to as the Holy City of New York. Quite an honor.

It is empblematic of the failure of Islamic groups in the United States to condemn Al Qaeda or the vile behavior of Terrorists in Iraq.

Since there's so many of them we need to ge better aquainted with our muslim fellow citizens. We should invite them to our homes for dinner or pay a visit to our neighborhood mosque to see what's cooking.

We must remember never to hurt their delicate feelings by offering them a martini or a pork sandwich.

Thank you. I am glad someone wrote that. I don’t agree about the strait jacket though. I don’t believe he is nuts. IMHO, he is playing on the other team.

They know that the elites are sucking up to them and asking their pardon for our “crimes” in the Middle East. We are free to use our military when it serves the interest of Saudi Arabia, as in the Gulf War,or a regime on the periphery, such as Afghanistan, but not when it serves the interests of the United States by removing a hostile regime in Iraq, which is strategically more important.
