An 'insult' to 9-11 victims? NYC honors Muslim holiday

One of America's foremost experts on Islam says New York's decision to honor a Muslim holiday this weekend shows the city has not learned an important lesson from the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

New York's famous Empire State Building is lit up green today in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid, the biggest festival in the Muslim calendar marking the end of Ramadan. City officials say the lighting, which will continue through Sunday, "will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hanukah."

Robert Spencer, the director of Jihad Watch, says city leaders do not recognize the observance is "an insult to the memory" of the people who were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"That's because they don't think that it has anything to do with Islam in general," says Spencer, "even though the people who did kill 3,000 on 9/11 in New York City were motivated by Islamic teachings -- teachings that have still, six years later, not been repudiated, not been even examined in depth or with any serious attempt at reform by American-Muslim advocacy groups."

According to Spencer, those groups need to be called to account to "act much more energetically against jihadism and Islamic supremacism." He says until those groups speak out against jihadism, those who call on them to do so will continue to be vilified.

The Jihad Watch director says the city has not learned an important lesson from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"This is just part of an ongoing problem really that we assume -- without evidence -- that the teachings that motivated 9/11 are repudiated by Muslims and are not deeply rooted within Islam," he asserts. "And as long as we continue to assume this without evidence, there are still going to be Muslims who act on these teachings in order to recruit terrorists and to justify violence in the name of Islam."

Spencer says he expects most people who might be tempted to speak out against New York City honoring Eid "will be cowed from doing so by the prospect of being labeled bigots or racists."

His first statement here is blatantly incorrect. "New York" hasn't made any decision at all as far as the Empire State Building is concerned. The Empire State Building is a privately-owned building, and -- like it or not -- the owners of that building can do whatever the hell they want with their lighting.

I never thought I'd see the day when so-called "conservatives" would completely miss this point.

We lived in Saudi Arabia for many years and we know the dangers of Islam. Most muslims in Saudi who were kind to us passionately hate our faith in Christ. It is legal to kill family members who convert to Christianity. Jihad is a holy war that even the kindest people accept as legitimate. We Americans have no frame of reference for this mindset. We conclude that if someone appears to be a nice person, he/she could have no agenda that would hurt us. Not true in Islam. The number of very upstanding Muslims who are here to convert Americans to Islam is increasing exponentially in this country. This newest persuasion of NYC government to publicly celebrate Ramadan shows an ignorance of Islam that is frightening.

Thanks!

They are building mosques in this country faster than Jimmy Carter's minions can build tar-paper shacks.

If this crap keeps up, and I’m certain it will, revolution could be just around the corner.

Apparently you read the article from a different perspective than did I. I would be interested to know what perspective you represent.

It occurs to me... where are the 911 families on this? They should be out picketing or having a "die in" around the ESB when they honor the religion that killed their loved ones.

They should be out front on this. Kind of quiet don't you think.

I don't know who these "city officials" are, but unless the city government itself formally arranged to have the lighting done, they have no authority to make any statements about what the building's owners will or will not do with regard to the lights.

The comment that the lighting "will continue through Sunday" was probably based on information that is readily available to anyone who has access to the Internet and checks the building's official website:

Empire State Building Lighting Schedule

Does Robert Spencer think "New York" officially roots for the Giants football team just because the owner of the Empire State Building decided to light it up in blue after the Giants beat the Jets last week?

How about just rebuilding the WTC, placing a huge white flag up top, and lighting it up in celebration on every single Islamic “holy” day. ...which seems to be every other week.

Don't forget the bull's-eyes painted on both the re-built towers...

I’m sick of it. A bunch of fanatics kill 3000 people in a few minutes for the glory and advancement of their fake religion. Within a short time the whole bunch of fanatics becomes a new government-sponsored victim group and is empowered to whine and get all the special privileges that it wants.

This kind of thing is a shade of gray for me.

9/11 wasn’t about Islam. It was and is about fascism, people who get what they want and avoid accountability by distorting religion and telling lies. Really, if Osama was concerned about the human condition of muslims he would have been building roads, schools, and hospitals with his wealth instead of brainwashing the masses for his own personal vengance and ambitions.

I do not blame all muslims for that. It would make as much sense as blaming protestants for Timothy McVeigh. What I do blame them for is not standing up to the rampant demagoggery, and the use of religious dogma to mislead and justify mass murder.

Yet, America is the great melting pot. So long as these people come here, learn how to be American, and turely become American, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I think most people just want a peaceful place to live life and raise their kids. Those who have other intentions can be shown the door, so to speak.
