A Portrait of Europe's Aging Population
BusinessWeek ^ | October 9, 2007 | Elitsa Vucheva

Posted on 10/12/2007 9:06:31 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

There are currently more elderly people than children living in the EU, as Europe's young population has decreased by 21 percent - or 23 million -- in 25 years, 10 percent of which in the last ten years alone.

Only 16.2 percent of today's EU population is less than 14 years old, while one sixth (16.6 percent) is 65 years or more. In addition one out of every 25 EU citizens is over 80 years old.

Italy has the least young people (14.2%) and one out of every five Italians is more than 65 years old. At the other end of the scale, Ireland has the most youngsters (20.7%), according to a recently-released report by the Institute for Family Policies based in Spain.

However, the decrease in numbers has been greatest in Spain, where the young population has diminished by 44% in the 1990 to 2005 period.

Despite these figures, the EU population has grown by 8.2% over the last 27 years, now reaching almost 500 million.

This paradox can mostly be explained by an ever increasing number of immigrants coming to the EU. Last year alone, 75% of the population growth was the result of immigration flows, says the report.

France and the Netherlands are the only member states where the natural population growth has been higher than the immigration inflow.

A relative population growth can be noted only in Western European countries, however, while in central and eastern Europe it has either remained the same (Slovenia and Slovakia), or decreased.

The decrease has been most significant in new member state Bulgaria, which has lost almost 8% of its population (7.94%) in the last ten years.

Currently, around 7.6 million people live in Bulgaria -- but if its demographic trend continues, they will be 5.1 million by 2050.

Welcome back to the dark ages, EU.

Perhaps you thought you had defeated the hordes from Africa and the Middle East back in the 1200’s. You were wrong, they were patient knowing that you were just a bunch of effeminate cowards.

This should come as no surprise. The Eiroweenies have long been worshiping self and the here and now and not thinking of the future. My cousin in England has 6 children and is constantly harassed as helping to pollute the earth due to his many children. That is what happens when concern about the enviorment takes precedent over family.

Imagine, you get on a two-year waiting list to give birth under socialized medicine...so who would want to get pregnant when you have to maintain a gestation period of an elephant before you can deliver?

Which is worse, a declining population or our fate, an increase of 167 million people by 2060 and a non-Hispanic white population of less than 50%?

If immigration continues at current levels, the nation’s population will increase from 301 million today to 468 million in 2060 — a 167 million (56 percent) increase. Immigrants plus their descendents will account for 105 million (63 percent) of the increase. The total projected growth of 167 million is equal to the combined populations of Great Britain, France, and Spain. The 105 million from immigration by itself is equal to 13 additional New York Cities.

It does not matter whether the new immigrants are of non-European ancestry. The root of our problem is multiculturalism and governmental schools. Get rid of the two and we’ll fine even if our population is no longer European-majority.

Not really. The problem is our legal immigration policies and the inability to control our borders, including visa overstays. We are importing poverty and we don't need 1.2 million legal immigrants a year. We are at replacement population growth, i.e., 2.09. An America of almost half a billion people within 50 years is a major concern.

The multiculturalism comes from the fact that we are bringing in more people than we can assimilate. The Hispanic Challenge By Samuel P. Huntington And we are certainly not going to get rid of government schools anytime soon.

“..an ever increasing number of immigrants coming to the EU.”

I cannot find info on where these immigrants come from. Can anyone enlighten me on that subject or must I assume that their countries of origin are the same as that of our immigrants?

European immigrants (legal and illegal) come from many places, but the largest number are Muslims from North Africa.

Those are the "youths" who riot in the Paris suburbs and the "youths" who rape Swedish women by the dozens.

It is not a pretty picture.

Political correctness, white guilt, leftist ideologies, protected rights, etc., definitely seem to have flipped things in their favor this time around.

“It is not a pretty picture.”

It is not a pretty picture because the Europeans allow these crimes to take place without any significant punishment. I hope that we will keep this in mind when it starts happening here.

Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. Consider yourself praised because I’m going to steal your analogy. It’s great - thanks!!

Had I the choice btwn:

a. infirm or dead vs.

b. lost in a sea of illegal immigrants

I’d always choose b since I could still fight and argue. What would you choose? Death? Infirmity?

At least Latinos are culturally westernized, speak a European language and (for the racialists out there) are part Euro or "white."

I'd take mestizos over a dying and infirm population anyway. Did it even occur to you that "white" Americans still outproduce white Europeans (with whom, as a NEW WORLD society, we don't have as much in common with as we think)?

Let's not make the mistake of the Argentineans in thinking that we are "Europeans." Lets get our illegal immigration problem fixed, and let intermarriage and natural selection take care of the rest.

That is not the choice. It is a phony strawman. If the America of today no longer exists, but instead becomes a third world country that no longer holds the same values, I would no longer want to live here.
