SkyPilot,
Thank you.
This line caught my eye:
Our army and marines are far too few and overextended. The United States must either radically increase the size of these traditional ground units or scale back its commitments in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Through constant rotations, we are literally burning out gifted officers and lifetime professionals- and will lose their priceless expertise if they begin, as I fear, retiring en masse due to the sheer exhaustion.
This is "Slicks" legacy, some peace dividend aye....

Again, they are trying not just to defeat the insurgency, but to literally take Iraq from its primordial past to the twenty-first century within four years. A Herculean Task.
.
Thanks to those Military and Civilian who are working to support VICTORY,
No thanks to ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, etc, who support DEFEAT.

Thank you for posting this, a most interesting read. This paragraph scares me:
And yet the last thing American officers wish is a war with Iran, a conflict that would immediately jeopardize everything they have achieved since May. The result is sort of a desire for tougher sanctions, perhaps an embargo, to squeeze Iran enough to stop sending its agents and weapons to kill Americans, but without galvanizing the Shiites into a surrogate Iranian army.We will now have the democrats do everything they can to exploit this. Watch them fight against an embargo, for instance.

Thanks for posting the latest musings of our favorite military historian and Central Valley of California neighbor. My husband has been following him for several years. Congrats to you and your husband on your good taste in historians. To be honest, I never heard of him until yesterday.
He sure has more brain cells than I do.

One overlooked fact is that the Sunnis in Iraq in general are more educated than the Shias in Iraq, and they are as well more secular. aQ and their primitive interpretation of Islam is thus anathema to many of the Sunnis in Iraq.
I am rather optimistic about Iraq.

I agree. Of course, I’d be even more optimistic about Iraq if it had spent the last six years as a smoking bomb crater...
