this is total bs. both sides use different tactics to get what thay want out of these polls.

the fact is, almost 100% of people support some kind of "control". but you have to clearly define what you mean by control.

and this is a simple fact: "gun-nuts" are in the minority. however, these people are much, much more likely to write letters, call their congressman, stage a rally, and most importantly, VOTE on the single issue of gun rights.

oppositely, gun-grabbers may feel strongly about gun control, but they almost never take action and hardly ever vote for a candidate based on this single issue.

and elected officials, especially in the south and west, know not to even talk about touching lawful guns.

99% of all guns are never used in the commission of a crime. the focus needs to be on the criminals, not the guns.

No wording of the poll here. That could mean the difference between 30% or 60%.

Example:

Do you support stricter laws regarding the purchase of guns to prevent school shootings like we have seen the past few weeks?

OR

Do you support stricter laws regarding the purchase of guns that would prevent law abiding citizens from buying a gun for self defense?

You can see how different the response would be.

Correct. -- We have all seen posts like the below from men who claim conservative credentials, while they argue that our US Constitution was not intended to protect our individual rights from state or local government infringements.

These men claim that 'We, -as a society', decide which rights we will protect --- And if 'We' choose not to protect your right to do [whatever], so be it. -- If and when a majority of the people decide that we should protect a right, then we will. Given that we're a self-governing nation, there's nothing to stop the majority from deciding this.

--- For instance, if there's nothing in a state constitution about the right to keep and bear arms [and States can change their constitutions by super-majority decisions], - then --- States can ban all guns if they so chose.

“51 percent support stricter gun laws”

I’ll bet that 80% of those supporters have no idea about existing gun laws or think there are none.

Poll: 51 percent support stricter gun laws

Not long ago the gun banners claimed 80% favored more strict gun control laws.

When their lies can only barely break a majority, we're making good progress.

From Fox news:
Yet, the real problem with this gun phobia is that without guns, victims are much more vulnerable to criminal attack. Guns are used defensively some 2 million times each year. Even though the police are extremely important in reducing crime, they simply can’t be there all the time and virtually always arrive after the crime has been committed. Having a gun is by far the safest course of action when one is confronted by a criminal.

Did all of you people read the article? So far only one person has mentioned this in the comments:

“The survey result, based on telephone interviews with 1,010 adults, has a margin of sampling error...”

1,010 people?!?!? WTF kind of survey is that??? I can get more responses by simply emailing everyone at the local community college. Has Gallup gotten really lazy? or were then in a hurry to publish the results? Get back to me when you poll 10,100 people. Sheesh!

The article fails to mention where the “pollees” want the gun control to happen. Is it in Iraq, Afghanistan, West Bank, Iran, US, Canada?

Americans have grown way smarter than pollsters and pols realize.

I worked part time at a sporting goods store and every person we sold a gun to had to go through a Federal check and some were refused and one was told to come back the next day at a specific time where the police promptly arrested him.

As all know, most of the gun crimes are with black market guns and that will not stop, if you can smuggle in tons of drugs you can do the same with guns. You will always have those exceptions but do you throw away a right for all just for a minuscule few?

Were those that were asked told that it has been proven repeatedly that less guns in the hands of citizens means more crime? NOT

Was this once again the “Delphi/Alinsky Method” to funnel the results in a given direction?

Why, oh why, do the lie-berals not want to live by FACTS!

The problem is they probably did call 10,100 people. I read an article a few years back that stated the pollsters were having terrible times because more people refuse to participate and the ones that do may not be representative of the population as a whole. Many are lonely crazies and many lie to the pollster.

More calls have to be made now to just get to the lowest number of responses that fit into the statistical calculations to keep the error rates down.

The percent of error is still garbage as there will never be a follow-up to see if it was indeed accurate and these types of polls have no real way to follow-up due to the lack of any concrete outcomes/metrics, such as those that can be reviewed after elections.

There are a little less than four million NRA members. That is out of eighty million gun owners. There are about thirty six million anti-gun AARP members.

If the situation was reversed, we wouldn’t have gun control in this country.

It is probably true that 51% people think there should be stricter gun control than what they believe exists. A sample size of 1,000 is more than adequate for such a measurement, if the selection method is unbiased; indeed, an unbiased sample of even 250 would be better than a biased sample of 1,000,000.
