Detectives said they believe Edith Mecalla, who was a mother of 11 and a grandmother of 50, was targeted by Moise O. Opont, 17, at her home.
Opont raped and murdered her Sunday before the victim's granddaughter spotted him and he ran out the home's back door, investigators said.
Opont was charged Thursday.
The boy's father, Rev. Richard Opont, spoke with Local 6 about the incident.
"My defense is in God's hands," Opont said. "Every day, I teach my family the same thing."
"We expect people to die," the victim's granddaughter, Michelle Smith, said on Wednesday. "It is a part of life. But to go in this violent manner at this stage in your life, that is the part that hurts the most. She is 99 years old. You could see she is old and lying there. Why would you do this?"
Police did not give a cause of death in the case.
Neighbors said they are afraid for their lives after the crime.
"You just don't feel safe out here," neighbor Karen Montefusco said. "I don't know anybody who feels safe out here."

The poor kid prolly went mental after Bush vetoed the SCHIP bill and he thought he'd loose his health insurance while the old lady still had her Medicare coverage. So he couldn't deal with the unfairness of it all and went bonkers.
Okay, it's not quite the 'Twinkie Defense', but some bottom feeding lawyer may think this is a way to go.

Yeah, but Moise Opont had a rough upbringing, you know? Maybe someone hung a noose on a tree in his front yard, so he can't be to blame for his reaction to such a hate crime.
I bet the defense will use the race and stupidity cards. He was too stupid to understand that raping and murdering a 99 year old lady was a horrible crime. He does look as dumb as a box of rocks but I don’t think anyone can be that stupid.

Someone should just take him with a head shot on his way into court.
This kid is not stupid, he’s an animal and unfortunately there’s a lot more out there just like him. Our society is full of these predators and WILL NOT deal with them.
Luckily the victim didn’t have a gun. Someone could have been hurt.
