Bali survivor's sorrow

CANDICE Buchan was dancing and having an "awesome time" with friends when a series of bomb blasts ripped through Bali's Sari club, killing both her parents.

After being left an orphan at the age of 15, she spoke publicly for the first time today about the death of her mum and dad Gerardine and Stephen in the 2002 Bali bombings.

"I still remember being in the Sari Club that night for (a friend's) birthday with a big group of us having an awesome time," Ms Buchan, now 20, told a ceremony at Coogee in Sydney to mark the fifth anniversary of the bombings, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

"Mum and Dad were watching me from afar while we were dancing and at the time I thought it was so embarrassing," said Ms Buchan, an only child.

"I remember when the bomb went off like it was yesterday.

"I sometimes wonder why I got out of the club that night and why I wasn't left there.

"Just thinking about their last moments when they must have known their lives were ending still haunts me, and how much they must have suffered."

After five years of grieving privately, Ms Buchan said she always wondered whether life would have been any easier if one parent had survived.

"I would do anything in the world to bring them back," she said.

I have been there, at the bomb memorial. The devastation to the entire region is still being felt today.

The anger most people can deal with, its the surviovor’s guilt that brings down many.
