LONDON (Reuters) - More than 130 Muslim scholars from around the globe called on Thursday for peace and understanding between Islam and Christianity, saying "the very survival of the world itself is perhaps at stake."
In an unprecedented letter to Pope Benedict and other Christian leaders, 138 Muslim scholars said finding common ground between the world's biggest faiths was not simply a matter for polite dialogue between religious leaders.
"If Muslims and Christians are not at peace, the world cannot be at peace. With the terrible weaponry of the modern world; with Muslims and Christians intertwined everywhere as never before, no side can unilaterally win a conflict between more than half of the world's inhabitants," the scholars wrote.
"Our common future is at stake. The very survival of the world itself is perhaps at stake," they wrote, adding that Islam and Christianity already agreed that love of God and neighbor were the two most important commandments of their faiths.
Relations between Muslims and Christians have been strained as al Qaeda has struck around the world and as the United States and other Western countries intervened in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Such a joint letter is unprecedented in Islam, which has no central authority that speaks on behalf of all worshippers.
The list of signatories includes senior figures throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. They represent Sunni, Shi'ite and Sufi schools of Islam.
Among them were the grand muftis of Egypt, Palestine, Oman, Jordan, Syria, Bosnia and Russia and many imams and scholars. War-torn Iraq was represented by both Shi'ites and Sunnis.
Mustafa Cagrici, the mufti who prayed with Benedict in Istanbul's Blue Mosque last year, was also on the list, as was the popular Egyptian television preacher Amr Khaled.

A true moderate Muslim would cite "there is no compulsion in religion" as trumping the later Muhammad.

Talk is just that- talk.
If these ‘peacemakers’ really want to prove they are no threat to Christianity or any other religion let ONE- just ONE of them stand before a tv camera and RIP OUT the pages of the Koran that order submission to Islam or death- everything that is IN THERE that the so-called ‘extremists’ use to ‘hijack’ Islam.
Tear out the pages that have what they- as ‘good Muslims’ do not believe. Tear them out and destroy them! Hold up their ‘holy book’ without the orders to subjugate and terrorize non-Muslims in it.
Let them do that- and I’ll start to think there MIGHT be a decent Muslim on the planet. That’s my test for a ‘good Muslim’. Refusal means they believe, and consider holy, the very orders in the Koran being followed by terrorists. Refusal means they are my enemy. Half the population of the world? I doubt it- but so be it. If that’s how many enemies we have we’d better damn well face it.

You're right on target. In Logic 101, the above statement by the Muslim clerics would be classified as a "faulty premise". Therefore, all that follows is just BS.

I do not see this letter as a call for peace. I see it as a demand that we surrender and a vow to keep attacking us so long as we continue to defend ourselves.
The Quran is more friendly to Christians than Jews, in fact, Christians are recognized as more easily converted to Islam.
What does it say:
Although Jews and pagans will have the greatest enmity against Muslims, it is the Christians who will be ‘nearest in love to the believers’, (i.e. to Muslims). (Al-Ma’idah 5:82)
True Christians will not love Muhammad’s enemies. (Al-Mujadilah 58:22) [In other words, anyone who opposes Muhammad is not a true Christian.]
Muslims should not take Christians or Jews for friends. (Al-Ma’idah 5:51) They must fight against Christians and Jews who refuse Islam until they surrender, pay the poll-tax and are humiliated. The abolition of the poll-tax means jihad is restarted against Christians (and Jews) living under Islam, who should convert to Islam, or else be killed or enslaved. The abundance of wealth refers to booty flowing to the Muslims from this conquest. This is what the Muslim ‘Isa (Jesus) will do when he returns in the last days.

This historical negationism — appearing to affirm Christianity and Judaism whilst in fact rejecting and supplanting them — is a lynchpin of Muslim apologetics. What is being affirmed is in fact neither Christianity nor Judaism, but Jesus as a prophet of Islam, Moses as a Muslim etc. This is intended to lead to ‘reversion’ of Christians and Jews to Islam, which is what Siddiqi refers to when he speaks of ‘the joint responsibility’ of Jews and Christians to establish ‘the Kingdom of God’. By this he means that American Christians and Jews should work to establish shari’ah law and the rule of Islam in the United States.
