The United States tortures prisoners, former President Carter charged on Wednesday.
"I don't think it. I know it," Carter told CNN's Wolf Blitzer in an interview.
"Our country for the first time in my life time has abandoned the basic principle of human rights," Carter said. "We've said that the Geneva Conventions do not apply to those people in Abu Ghraib prison and Guantanamo, and we've said we can torture prisoners and deprive them of an accusation of a crime to which they are accused."
Carter also criticized President Bush's recent declaration: "This government does not torture people."
"That's not an accurate statement if you use the international norms of torture as has always been honored -- certainly in the last 60 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was promulgated," Carter charged.
"But you can make your own definition of human rights and say we don't violate them, and you can make your own definition of torture and say we don't violate them," Carter added.
Commenting on the Carter remarks, a senior White House official said, "Our position is clear. We don't torture. It's just sad to hear a former president speak like that."
When he dies, I am going to find his grave and take a **** on it.
How many years of torture have the good people of Iran endured since Jimmah unleashed the Ayatollah on them?
You got me with the poopy part!
Goobers. That’s what they are. Every one of them.
I hear a lot of people say that. I believe there will be a very long line. If I was President and he died, I would NOT attend his funeral. I would just state, "An utterly evil being has died. It is a day to rejoice." I absolutely despise everything about that vile slimbag.
Actually, I think Hugo Chavez is a bigger nutjob than even Carter.
He is one of the most irrelevant hacks on the face of the planet. I jus wish the White House press office would say something other then “no comment.” “We question why Mr. Carter openly supports terrorists and Dictators” would be a good start.
The peanut farmer from Georgia is the reason we have to fight the terrorists
I don’t think it will be hard to find his grave. Those aren’t pools of tears saturating the ground.
The real scandal here is that a would-be reputable news organization would assist this old dung beetle in promoting his Jew-hating book by giving him a platform to recycle this tired BS about “torture”.
Hmmm... Jimmy peanut grows a substance known to induce Anaphylactic shock, which can lead to death in a matter of minutes if left untreated.
Saint or Sadist.. you decide...
Me too....A duece for Jimmah-the absolute worst president ever!
If I thought It would save just ONE American soldiers life,
hell yeah I’d torture a whole passel of moose limbs.
Peanut farmer, AKA stupid failed president, still trying to reach relevancy.
Jimmah should know about torture. During his miserable failure of an administration every family farmer in America was tortured. They were drowned in debt by his record high interest rates. It certainly sounds worse than water boarding to me. With water boarding no one dies. During the Carter years farmers lost their heritage. A fate nearly as bad as death. Do I even have to mention his record on standing up for our hostages. Thank God for Ronald Reagan and his love for the American people.
I wish Ex Presidents would sign an agreement at the end of their terms in office, To not make any Public Statements, about anything. If they do they forfeit their pension and all of the perks..
I wish Jim would spend more time in Africa, they know how to handle him, they just tell him ( Jimmy get Lost)
ROFL!!!
Jimmy Carter is alive.
There's no justice.
It’s sad that he’s so awful he can give peanuts a bad name. Poor peanuts!
Jimmy Carter is against torture, but is he against my torture at having to be constantly reminded that he was actually elected President? Yes, yes, of course, it was a big mistake, but he did serve long enough to disgrace and embarrass all of us. Not to mention what he did the the economy and to our hopefullness for the future! Clearly, Jimmy Carter was the single worst president ever elected in this country! Now, instead of quietly fading away, he continues to put his face in my face over and over again! Now, that is real torture! If he was sincere about ending torture, he would go away, never, never to return again! But, of course, he’s Jimmy Carter, the gift that keeps on taking!
