Whenever pictures of Bainbridges family flashed on the screen, an area of her brain called the fusiform gyrus, which neuroscientists had identified as playing a central role in face recognition, lit up on the scan. We were stunned, Owen told me. The fusiform-gyrus activation in her brain was not simply similar to normal; it was exactly the same as normal volunteers.I wonder what Mr. Schiavo would have to say about that.

As Owen put it, The thought of coma, vegetative state, and other disorders of consciousness troubles us all, because it awakens the old terror of being buried alive. Can any of these patients think, feel, or understand those around them? And, if so, what does this tell us about the nature of consciousness itself? That's the horrible thought, it would be like being buried alive when trapped with a damaged brain. How much do they hear, are they conscious of being trapped?

Does anyone here believe there is a collective "uh-oh" going on in the anti-Terri camp?
Me either. They'll find a way to justify their reasoning. bas**rds

Sounds as if a person’s soul is locked up in a body that no longer functions correctly. Gee, who would ever have thought that?. I believe that “vegetative” people know what is happening around them. I have watched sick people in my family react when someone said things about the “poor souls” who were no longer there. I had the thought they were using their eyes to scream they were still there.

You’re right, probably not. Keep in mind, these are the same people who say that if the life inside the womb doesn’t have all of it’s fingers and toes yet, it’s okay to kill it.
Then they cry about human rights violations in Iraq.

I wonder what Mr. Schiavo would have to say about that. I doubt he would care. Took him awhile, but he got what he wanted - to get rid of his wife without losing the money through a divorce.
