HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) - The man accused of driving into a plaza at the University of North Carolina last year, injuring nine people, will offer a mental impairment defense at his trial, his lawyer said in court papers.

Mohammed Taheri-Azar, 24, told investigators he hoped to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world" when he drove the rented SUV into the plaza at the school's Chapel Hill campus in March 2006, authorities have said. Nine people were injured, none seriously.

The Iranian-born Taheri-Azar, a 2005 UNC graduate, faces multiple counts of attempted murder and assault.

A notice filed in court Wednesday by public defender James Williams indicates that a defense of insanity, mental infirmity and-or diminished capacity will be used. The trial has been tentatively scheduled for March.

Orange-Chatham District Attorney Jim Woodall has said Taheri-Azar knew what he was doing. His vehicle plowed through a gathering place known as the Pit, scattering students. Moments later, Taheri-azar called 911 to surrender.

Being a UNC grad, he has a strong chance of proving the above to be true.

So now he is insane? Oh BS. Lock him up for life in a secure prison mental ward and play Britney Spears, Barbra Streisand & Barry Manilow music. The only shows he should see is The View & Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Then lets see how insane is his.

No doubt the man will be acquitted. Within a year or so the spot of the incident will be renamed in his honor. Soon after that a statue of the man will be erected in a prominent location on campus (perhaps near the Old Well) and students will gather around it to protest one thing or another. They will demand and get a building named for the man as well as an endowed professorship or perhaps a lecture series.
And all these events will be viewed as normal on Planet Chapel Hill.

Not exactly: students at NYU act unaffectedly as they have nothing to prove. Students at Chapel Hill act deliberately as they have to prove their liberal/left credentials.

So basically Is-Lame is a mental illness just like it’s kissin’ cousin Liberalism?

Got it.

Some things are intuitively obvious.

Actually, Berkeley is getting better. Recently, Cal announced plans to cut down a grove of trees to build an athletic training center. As one might expect, protests began.
Chief Running Wolf (who is about 40 yrs old or so) announced that he was protesting the destruction of trees that his Native American ancestors camped around. He was nonplussed when word leaked that the University planted the grove in the 1920’s.
The Chief and others began to camp in the trees to prevent Cal from unleashing the chain saws. Of course, protests aren’t what the used to be as the protesters slept in hammocks strung from limbs of the trees, ate take-out, drank bottled water, and communicated by cell phones.
As it turns out, almost none of the protesters are students - who are too enraptured by Cal’s undefeated football team to be concerned about a few trees - but are the detritus of aging hippies who moved to Berkeley decades ago and never left.
If there is hope for Berkeley, there is hope for almost anywhere.

Tell your son that a person grows by experience, and a stint with a anti-Israel prof would be a good learning experience. Of course, the danger exist your son may imbibe some of the vitriol spewed out by this academic, but one cannot shield one’s offspring from all stupidity.
