I don’t. Dogs are pack animals and are happiest when part of a pack. They’ve been bred for domestic use for hundred and hundred of years. I’ve seen what packs of wild dogs can do. It ain’t pretty as they are generally worse than coyotes, wolves, or mtn lions. Wild dogs are usually just plain mean and will go after a person in a heart beat. Other wild animals will usually run unless they are rabid or starving.
Wild dogs usually need to be shot.
We see many loose dogs running on the reservations. They do not seem to ever go inside ( as a pet ).
Nor are they chained up much.

speculated that the slain lion was responsible for killing a man’s pet miniature horse in the Nederland area Sept. 2 and a couple’s 60-pound Australian shepherd in Nederland on Sept. 27.

So the dog was trapped in the cougar's jaws, and this guy managed to shoot the cougar in the head without hitting the dog? That guy's a good shot!

The mayor of LA took it a step further, and even changed HIS name. His was Villar, hers was Rigosa, so they both became Villarigosa.

Keeping a dog at night on a 30 foot chain is NORMAL animal control in rural areas. The reason for this is so that the dogs remain in a certain area, generally by the front door where they have sight of the driveway and/or pastures. This way they can maintain ‘guard’ over the entrance to the house and ‘protect’ the stock animals in the pastures.
Mountain lions, bears and coyotes have no problem harrassing, maiming or killing horses, cattle, sheep, chickens and other farm animals. Dogs are great audio alarm systems.
Do they require a covered shelter? Only when the weather turns harsh. So, you might leave the swinging door open to the garage for them to go into if they prefer. I’ve seen dogs that preferred to sleep outdoors in the snow. Even a couple that didn’t seem to mind the summer rains. Given the choice, most animals will seek shelter from a cold rain.
Is there a difference between work dogs and family pets? You bet there is. A work dogs is out walking in the mud and animal waste all day, not exactly the animal I would want rolling on my living room carpets in the evening, or trying to climb in bed with the kids at night.
Well said! The problem is that these ‘PETA Phreaks’ think that EVERY animal should be some sort of pampered Poodle-dog on a velvet cushion, LOL!
I suspect they are lonely women who own waaaaay too many cats. ;)
She is obviously a product of the public schools. You don't end a sentence with a preposition. She also has a master's degree from the University of Colorado. That speaks volumes about the quality of education at that institution. Her party affiliation is "progressive".
Your perspective is noted, and it is a legitimate difference in viewing of a dog’s function. Do you maintain an emotional relationship with your working dogs, or are they simply another functional piece of livestock to you?
I am not being a wise guy, because I understand your point of view...I am simply curious. I have never been able to maintain a working relationship with a dog (having never been in the position of needing a working dog)
I mean, I can understand people who put dobermans and rottweilers out as guards, and if they are killed, it is probably no big deal to those people since they don’t spend any time socializing in any way with the animal. But as a rancher, would your working dog follow you around, jump in the bed of your truck, or run out to the entranceway to your property to greet you, and would that register on you, or is it just an animal like a pig or steer?
I agree it is different, and I don’t have a problem with an animal living in the elements (which most dogs happily seem to do as long as they aren’t a little yap dog that needs a sweater)

Yes, they generally ride in the bed of the truck or if the weather is cruddy, then you put a piece of canvas down so they can get in the cab to fight off the cold.
When they start getting old, you leave them at home if you know the day is going to be a long hot one. You know, one of those ones that starts before sunrise and doesn’t end until the job is done. There is no reason to let an animal work itself to death just because it will.
