Population Decline Hitting New Jersey Hard

TRENTON, NJ (AP) -- New Jersey's accelerating population loss is starting to have significant economic and fiscal consequences for the state

[SNIP]

The report found the state lost 231,565 people between 2002 and 2006, including 72,547 people last year. The latter was the fourth highest loss in the nation behind only California, Louisiana and New York.

Meanwhile, North Carolina grew by 807,000 people over the four-year period, displacing New Jersey last year as the nation's 10th most populous state, the report stated.

When lost income and sales taxes from the people who left New Jersey are considered, the population drain is estimated to have cost the state $680 million in tax revenue last year, the report found.

[SNIP]

From 2000 to 2005, the largest net outflow of New Jersey taxpayers was to Florida (124,584 people), Pennsylvania (42,459 people) and North Carolina (29,803 people), their report found.

It found the state had a positive net inflow of taxpayers from New York (148,538 people).

I just said it was fine that they have what they have, old people do need to quit lobbying for more welfare benefits like medicare part d that only serve to redistribute wealth.

LOL. How do you make them "quit lobbying?" Disband AARP? The prescription drug program was pushed by a Rep President and approved by a Rep Congress.

I am just saying that if a group has 70% of the wealth in a society they should be very careful if they start advocating the redistribution of wealth. They just might end up getting what they want.

You speak like anyone over 65 is part of a monolithic group that acts in concert. In fact, they are just part of the political demographic. They vote their interests. It is up to other groups to challenge them. That's the way our political system works.

To what depth has New Jersey fallen if its people are fleeing to Pennsylvania?

I’m a life long Jersey resident. People are leaving but the very wealthy are moving in as well as masses of illegals.
In north NJ here they continue to turn every square foot available into million dollar condos and they sell in a day .
This state is a corrupt hell hole for sure . Old school democrats own the place and the corruption would make Nero blush. People keep voting them in because half the population is on the take some how ,working for the State.
In North NJ it does not seem like the population is thinning. It takes an hour to drive 5 miles on any given day as the traffic is massive , any time , any hour.

I’ve been waiting for the poll results of the people of Illinois, and Chicago/Cook County in particular. This city has been under the dictatorship of the dimocrat party for over 70 years and it shows. Both the county and the city want to raise taxes across the board to further cover their corrupt practice of running government “for the people.” It’s a tragedy and disgrace. Even when we had a RINO governor, on and off for 30 years, not a nickel’s difference. When I retired, assuming I’m not taxed to death, I’m heading to a “red” state in the south or west, anywhere but here or east. The silent and deadly beat of the socialist drum continues unabated. When are we going to truly organize a taxpayer’s revolt and throw all, I mean all, the bums out, regardless of party affiliation? MY GOD, our freedom’s continue to erode as our country goes down the drain. What are we leaving our kids and grand kids?

[New Jersey’s accelerating population loss is starting to have significant economic and fiscal consequences for the state]

Once again proving that high taxes destroys states and cities by driving the income earners out. But the marxist left grows despite the truth of basic economic principles continually being found the truth.
The left is mentally ill and does not know it and the illitate working class and educated fools are thier main victims but they did elect the fool politicians who steal all their money. Every one else runs.

You mean people collecting entitlements don’t leave?
No they don’t , they bring their cousins here too for the free ride.
The politicians here will never leave either. Most of them are triple dippin , holding 3 even 4 payed positions at the same time.Local cops in my little town9 where there is zero crime to even worry about ) are making upwards of 100 thousand a year and many of them moonlight at the outlet stores for an extra $200 a day and all the clothes they can steal.

not to defend NJ but the reason taxes are cheaper in PA is because there is so much more work here in NJ compared to PA . It’s NJ’s location that gives them the excuse for higher taxes. Pay scales are higher here and there are jobs to be had everywhere. I know places where taxes are real low , there is also nothing there either.
That being said this ,state still sucks !

I know a guy that retired to Eastern PA to be near his wife's aging parents. It was a NYC exoburb. There weren't any jobs there other than minimum wage, so he moved back to the Midwest..

Hey North Carolina, be on guard ... these are some of the same people that also left Philly and New York after screwing them up

They will make the same demands on your State till they screw it up like NJ, PA, NY .. to name just a few

Funny - elsewhere in the article it states that the exodus might be slowed by the drop in property values. Might be too late to get out while the "getting is good"

I can speak only for myself, but when my time comes to retire (two years' hence), my intention is to sell my property (in a declining neighborhood) for whatever price I can get, simply to get out and be free of it.

If I can get 100% back of what I put into it 20 years ago, that's fine.
If I can get 75%, that's ok, too.
If I can get only 50%, again, I don't care.
I will sell for nearly any price, simply to "get out".

I suspect that the retirement of the baby boom generation will begin a "migration" unlike any other previously seen in America.

We will see a large part of an entire generation fleeing to try to "get back to where they once belonged". That is to say, to places that more resemble the America they were born into, rather than the America "that is today".

I’m from Yonkers, I came to PA 13 years ago because it was cheaper to own a home and luckily my husband has a decent paying job. I would go back to NY in a minuet because that is really my home. I would love to go live in Putnam. But I could never afford a 500K ranch house and 8k taxes. My children are hicks LOL.

Have you seen the NEW Jersey City lately. 10 of us together couldn’t afford to live there is we pooled all our money. I have a friend who is a well known musician. He came from Jersey City and was told his whole life to make something of himself and get out. He did . Now he wants to come back and he can’t afford it .My parents first house in Jersey City cosy $16,000 , Its about $750,000 now .That;s in one generation.

They need to raise N.J.’s taxes to offset the loss in the number of taxpayers! LOL!
